About the Item

This beautifully framed Mandala thangka is meticulously hand-painted on canvas, adorned with 24K real gold. The blue, ochre and green tones, complemented by the touch of gold, make it a truly stunning piece of art. Dimensions without the frame: 25" x 19" A detailed handout explaining the process of creating a thangka will be included with your purchase. The Mandala, symbolizing "wholeness," is often used as an aid in meditation. The term "mandala," originating from the Sanskrit word for "circle," has become widely used to describe any circular geometric pattern. Early forms of the Mandala appeared in Hinduism, where geometric shapes represented deities. Buddhism expanded this concept, with Mandalas now regarded as three-dimensional celestial palaces containing rooms filled with deities—essentially a "mind map" for spiritual guidance. Our collection focuses primarily on Buddhist Mandalas. While each painting is unique, they generally adhere to certain foundational rules of composition and geometric proportion. A traditional Mandala typically includes two key elements: an outer circle and a square placed inside. These circles and rings represent a pure space, shielded from external impurities and negative influences. The outermost circle often features flames, symbolizing protection, while the innermost circle is composed of lotus petals, representing purity—an iconic symbol in Buddhist art, as seen in deities seated upon lotus thrones. The square, representing the symbolic "palace" or "mind map," houses the principal deity at its center, around which the entire practice revolves. While the Mandala can contain various deities, the central figure is always the focus, guiding the practitioner on their spiritual journey. Mandalas also serve as powerful tools for meditation. By focusing on the Mandala, practitioners access the celestial palace, with entrances marked by the four cardinal directions. A teacher or guru may guide you through these sacred realms, helping you visualize each part of the Mandala. In some instances, figures above and below the Mandala represent the celestial and earthly worlds. In addition to its spiritual significance, a Mandala painting brings peace and tranquility to any space, enhancing the atmosphere with its calming energy.

Mandala represents "wholeness" and is also used as an aid in meditation. The term mandala has become a generic way of describing any circular geometric pattern. The word mandala originated from Sanskrit which means “Circle”. Early versions of the Mandala can be found in the Hindu faith where we would see geometric shapes representing deities. Buddhism took this concept one step further and today if you speak to someone in the Buddhist faith they will tell you that these paintings are in essence a 3 dimensional celestial palace with rooms that contains deities. Let’s call this a mind map, a map to help us further our spiritual journey. Our collection will focus almost entirely on Buddhist Mandalas, a Mandala by Buddhist standards will respect certain basic rules of composition and geometric proportion, although each painting you see is unique in its own way, we will try and cover some of these basic iconographic rules. A Mandala almost always consists of two elements, an outer circle combined with a square positioned inside. In most cases these circles or rings create a pure space protected from external impurities and negative forces. The number of these circles can differ from one painting to another. In almost all mandalas the outermost circle will show flames which commonly represents protection and the innermost circle with be lotus petals which is the Buddhist symbol for purity. This imagery is typical of Mandalas and Thangkas in general which is why almost all deities are seated on lotus thrones. The square represents this symbolic palace or mind map, which is mentioned in the previous section. Any Mandala will always contain a principle deity it can be painted or symbolized by a lotus flower in the case of the Kalachakra Mandala...
