About the Item

Oil on Canvas. The painting looks to the similar work by Paolo Veronese (1528-1588), dated around 1560-70 and now in the Prado Museum, from which our painting takes up the composition of the figures, changing all the background and clothing of the characters. Veronese's work was so successful that it was replicated by his own workshop, with numerous variations: our work probably comes from one of these copies, replicated at a later date. The 'episode depicted is told in the biblical book of Exodus and recounts the finding of baby Moses, left by his mother in a basket along the banks of the Nile River to save him from the slaughter of the children of Israel perpetrated by Pharaoh; Pharaoh's daughter, who went to the river with her retinue, finds and rescues him, adopting him. The figures in the scene are depicted in eighteenth-century clothing, in particular the following stands out for richness and sumptuousness the dress of the princess; the only exotic element is the presence of a black servant in the retinue, while the background also hints at a Northern -European landscape with dense forest vegetation. The painting, restored and retiled, is presented in an 11th-century frame.
