About the Item

Oil on Canvas. North Italian school of the 17th-18th centuries. The large scene is filled with figures in ancient Eastern garb, set in a northern, richly vegetated landscape with mountain peaks in the distance. The left half is occupied mainly by St. John the Baptist, standing upright and depicted according to traditional iconography: he is dressed in a poor tunic made of animal skins, but has draped around him a red mantle, the symbol of martyrdom; he holds in one hand the cross-shaped staff, around which he rolls the scroll with the inscription "Ecce Agnus Dei," symbolizing his role as forerunner and herald of Christ, and at his feet the 'lamb itself, sacrificial victim and thus a symbol of Christ's sacrifice. With his other hand John points to his right to someone outside the frame of the scene, but who is obviously Christ: this gesture catalyzes the gazes of the entire crowd placed on the right of the scene, a diverse crowd representing different genders, social classes, and races, indicating the universality of the Baptist's message. The previously restored and re-tinted work has a diffuse patina to be cleaned up. It is presented in antique frame.
