About the Item

Victorian Figurative Oil Painting of a Young Lady Lacemaker in a Cottage Interior. Oil on Canvas laid on artists board and Framed in its original Gilt Frame. William H Weatherhead 1843 -1911 "The Lacemaker" - Oil on Canvas, Signed and Framed 21 by 15 and framed 29 by 22 inches, £4000 This Oil painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1871. This Oil is beautifully painted and is an absolutely wonderful example of this highly regarded artist's work. A London painter of genre, he exhibited from 1862 at the RA, British Institute, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society & elsewhere. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters (RI) in 1885, resigning in 1903. Examples of his work can be found in in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Dundee City A.G., and Sydney A.G. Weatherhead started his career young, listed as an artist at aged 17 and exhibiting for the first time at the Royal Academy two years later. His work suited the Victorian sensibilities and had a strong moral thread, they appreciated works in which the reality of human life met an endurance of spirit and tenacity of goodness. In the case of many of his female subjects, they have a beauty of composure also redolent of their moral goodness. In a selection of scenes depicting these women hard at work, oftentimes engaged in the chores of rural life, this beauty becomes admirable. Despite the hardship of their life, they have retained their spirited morality, which is reflected in their physical beauty. This work was his Royal Academy exhibit in 1871 and it is interesting to muse on the various owners of this piece in the intervening years. It is certainly of the highest quality and is presented in excellent condition and in it's original Watts style gilt Frame. Weatherhead is listed as an artist at the you

"Meditation" Dutch Woman Sewing Interior Genre Home scene Fruit Flowers on Table
By Bernard De Hoog
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Bernard de Hoog was born in Amsterdam in 1866. He studied under J.F. Hulk and J.C. van Essen at the Quellinus School in Amsterdam. Mainly a genre and portrait painter, he occupies a distinguished place among the masters of Dutch modernism. He was associated with The Hague School, primarily a movement of realism, a reaction against Romanticism. He lived and worked in Laren, Haarlem, Bussum, and The Hague enjoying much commercial success. His paintings were readily exported to the United State, Canada, and England. De Hoog advocated the simple country life and produced many endearing interior scenes inspired by compassion for the impoverished existence of the Dutch peasantry. Set within a quiet domestic interior space, our painting catches a meditative moment of a woman in the midst of her sewing. A large window illuminates this intimate interior. de Hoog’s delicate brushwork captures the sunlight reflected in the woman’s red dress...
