About the Item

Ferrara school of the late sixteenth century - circle of Giuseppe Mazzuoli known as Bastarolo (Ferrara 1536 - 1589) St. Jerome penitent in the cave Oil on copper - 23 x 18 cm. - In frame 28 x 24 Notes: On the back of the rummy, stamp imprinted in sealing wax with MM monogram This representation of the penitent St. Jerome, still in a sixteenth-century style, due to color evidence and a plastic treatment of the figurative dimension, can be placed in the context of an author from Ferrara active in the late sixteenth century. The saint is portrayed in half-length with his typical iconographic attributes: the crucifix to which to address adoration, the skull symbol of penance on the left hand resting on a closed book, and finally the stone that he holds with his right hand. Depicted in a three-quarter length half-length, with a beard and long hair, Saint Jerome occupies the space in the foreground, evoking in particular the period of hardness and solitude spent in the desert. The long and disheveled hair, the gaze that turns downwards, restore the sense of an icon of faith that ignites religious devotion and invites spiritual reflection and repentance. The style characters of our rummy would make us circumscribe the authorship to an author from the circle of Giuseppe Mazzuoli, known as Bastarolo (Ferrara 1536 - 1589), whose pictorial lexicon is in fact based on the figurative tradition of Ferrara, from which the gaudy chromatism and on and intense naturalism, and on the knowledge of Emilian and Venetian painting. Consider that with the seventies and eighties Mazzuoli's moment of greatest fame opens, whose painting presents a progressive orientation towards more simplified compositions, which collect the counter-reformed instances of the changed religious climate of Ferrara and therefore the particular needs of the client. These characteristics can be grasped by observing the work in question, similar to the accomplishments of the painter's maturity. Work in excellent condition. Antique frame, not coeval. For more information, please contact us. Painting accompanied by a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law (FIMA)

Saint John Evangelist Paint Oil on canvas Old master 18th Century French School
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Saint John the Evangelist French school of the eighteenth century Oil painting on canvas 82 x 64 cm. - in frame 102 x 84 cm. In this pleasant painting we see the portrait of the evangelist John, holding a pen in his hand while writing the pages of the Gospel, while behind him it is possible to recognize the profile of an eagle, his typical iconographic attribute. The graceful face, which still reveals the devout attitude, which gives the painting a more intimate and delicate, not excessive religiosity, is one of the typical characteristics for works intended for domestic devotion, as in the case of this Saint John. From the representation of the Saint the freshness of his features immediately stands out, he is in fact portrayed as young and handsome: and it is precisely this iconographic peculiarity that makes the work fascinating and very pleasant, probably commissioned for a private room. The painting presents the peculiarities of eighteenth-century French portraiture, characterized by a soft drawing and a wise use of light. The rather marked chiaroscuro and well-calibrated shades produce an excellent result thanks to the play of light on the face, highlighted by the dark background of the scene. The painting has been relined and is in an excellent state of conservation with the colors still bright and a very healthy pictorial layer. The painting is sold together with a nice golden frame. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is sold with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic card. We take care and organize the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers. It is also possible to see the painting in the Riva del Garda...

Lombard School of the 17th century St. Joseph with Flower Stick Oil on oval canvas 92 x 70 cm. In antique frame 106 x 85 cm. The work shows us an intense image of St. Joseph, portrayed according to the classical iconography that sees him as a mature man holding in his hands a staff from which lilies bloom, symbol of the Virgin's purity. This iconographic attribute also alludes to his figure as God's chosen one as Mary's future husband. According to the apocryphal gospels, the Virgin had grown up in the Temple of Jerusalem, following a monastic lifestyle, and when she reached marriageable age, each of the suitors was given a dry branch...
