About the Item

Measures Painting Painting 9.5 x 13 inches sight Framed 18.5 x 22.75 inches Helen Katharine Forbes (February 3, 1891 – May 27, 1945) was a distinguished American painter and muralist renowned for her Western landscapes, portraits, and still-life compositions. Born in San Francisco, California, into a pioneer family, Forbes pursued her passion for art from an early age. Forbes honed her artistic skills at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (later the San Francisco Art Institute), where she studied under Frank Joseph Van Sloun and was awarded a lifetime scholarship in 1914. She furthered her studies in Europe, attending the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, and training under prominent artists such as André Lhote, Ernst Leyden, and Hermann Groeber between 1921 and 1925. Throughout her career, she exhibited remarkable versatility, working in mediums including oil, watercolor, and egg tempera. Her oeuvre encompasses landscapes that capture scenes from Mexico, Mono Lake, the Sierras, and Death Valley, her landscapes reflect a deep connection to the Western United States. It also includes murals done during the 1930s, where she contributed significantly to New Deal art projects. Notably, she collaborated with artist Dorothy Wagner Puccinelli in 1939 to create four Noah's Ark-themed murals for the Mother's Building at the San Francisco Zoo, funded by the Federal Art Project and Works Progress Administration. She also completed murals for post offices in Susanville and Monrovia, California, under the Treasury Section of Fine Arts. Forbes shared her expertise through teaching positions, including a tenure at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1931 to 1932. She was an active member of various art organizations, serving as president and co-founder of the San Francisco Society of Women Artists from 1928 to 1930. Her contributions have been recognized in numerous exhibitions, such as those at the De Young Memorial Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Art. Helen Katharine Forbes's dedication to her craft and her role in enriching American art, particularly through her involvement in New Deal projects, have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire. The work offered here was exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It is matted and framed under glass and retains a period carved wood molding. A lovely work perfect for an intimate corner of any room.

Undersea Coral Caverns, Tahiti
By Zarh Pritchard
Located in Spokane, WA
Measurement Painting 23.5 x 14.5 inches Framed 30 x 21.125 inches Zarh Pritchard (1866–1956) was an artist known for his ethereal and atmospheric paintings, particularly of underwater scenes, which he actually painted underwater in what is now considered primitive diving gear or early scuba diving equipment. His work often depicted dreamlike, almost mystical landscapes with a soft, hazy quality. This painting of coral caverns showcases a delicate, misty effect of gorgeous pastel colors, which aligns with Pritchard’s style. He used a diving helmet and gear to actually paint underwater on leather, creating the most unusual and evocative impressionist paintings, unparalleled in art history. This painting retains a hand made wood frame covered in 23k gold by famed Los Angeles framer...
