About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
In Grape, Dani Humberstone reduces the still life tradition to its purest gesture-a single orb of fruit suspended in darkness, its surface a masterclass in painterly precision. The grape's cool, bluish-purple skin is soft yet resilient, mottled with faint imperfections that lend it realism and history. Its roundness is amplified by a faint halo of reflected light and a short, green stem that injects a jolt of organic movement into the otherwise still composition. The black background isolates the grape, heightening its visual gravity.
Humberstone employs oil paint to capture the translucent sheen and delicate surface bloom of the grape, balancing realism with subtle abstraction. The painter's hand is nearly invisible-so refined is the execution-but the resulting intimacy is unmistakable. This isn't just a grape; it's a meditation on ripeness, memory, and attention. There is an almost lunar quality to its glow, as if this common fruit had absorbed starlight. Its fragility is palpable, and the isolation of the image renders it both quiet and monumental.
Despite its minimalism, the work speaks volumes about Humberstone's practice: to slow time, to make space, to imbue the singular with depth. The small scale and tight composition encourage slow looking, rewarding viewers who engage beyond the initial illusion of simplicity. Grape is a refined, intimate exploration of color, texture, and presence that exemplifies the artist's subtle yet profound vision.
Artist Bio:
Born in London, Dani attended a Rudolph Steiner school before studying fashion in Brighton. After which she returned to her original love of painting and drawing, freelancing for years as an artist before setting up a publishing company where she worked as the principal artist and designer. After many years in business, she left publishing and turned to painting full time.
Dani was Vice-President of the Society of Women Artists for five years becoming Director when she stepped down.
The winner of several awards for painting, she is regularly invited to exhibit at the Florence Biennale and has been selected to show at the RA Summer Exhibition. She continues to show regularly in the UK, Europe, Asia & the USA.
Using principally the imagery of fruit in much of her work, her interest is largely in its metaphorical and symbolic use in the visual arts as well as strong links to language, examples include the Bible, myth and fairy tale, branding, popular culture, language, literature and as symbols of power, passion, and fertility.
The use of traditional painting techniques, strong light and shade or chiaroscuro creates a sense of drama. There is a surreal quality and humour in much of her work but importantly there is also a respectful nod to the painters of the Renaissance and many influences from the Dutch Golden Age of the principally 17th century.

“As a painter I can tear the visual curtain to reveal a microscopic world within worlds, layered memory and the inclusion of personal objects, the work almost becomes portraiture.” Also, “Within my work I aspire to fuse the still-life tradition and Vanitas painting within a contemporary context, using both familiar objects and ideas.”- Dani Humberstone SWA

Dani Humberstone
Discover new paintings by artist Dani Humberstone. Dani Humberstone uses the symbolism of ripe fruit to illustrate the narrative. Painting directly from life allows her to translate three dimensions into two and capture the essence or life force of the subject. Individual fruits damage easily; so as they slowly age she tracks their gradual decay in the painting as she works. Fruit has been used metaphorically in art and language for centuries. It has helped Illustrate Fairy Tales, Mythology, The Bible and Shakespeare.etc An apple in Renaissance painting was symbolic of ‘a fallen woman’ and we still use fruit analogies to describe ourselves and our lives today. In her own work the artist also uses elements of abstraction, landscape or line drawing to hint at a deeper narrative within and opening the door to unseen possibilities beyond the immediate image. Dani Humberstone paints in oils, predominantly Old Holland Classic Oilcolour - using transparent glazes over opaque colour which creates intense levels of luminosity and depth. Strong light and shade, chiaroscuro, give atmosphere and tone.

Still Life with Grapes - original still life realism painting - contemporary art
Located in London, Chelsea
Dramatic and luxurious, Still Life with Grapes is a striking study of contrast, texture, and abundance. The deep blue-black grapes spill onto a delicate porcelain plate, their clustered forms exuding a natural opulence. The twisting vine, reaching upward like a sculptural relic, adds an element of wild elegance, while the surrounding leaves, tinged with autumnal hues, remind us of the inevitable change of seasons.
Titorenkov’s exquisite use of light and shadow heightens the depth of this composition—the grapes shimmer under soft illumination, each one a study in transparency and reflection. The intricate blue patterns of the plate lend an air of timeless refinement, grounding the composition in a sense of tradition. Against the stark darkness of the background, the fruit and its organic details stand out with mesmerizing clarity.
This painting is more than a depiction of fruit; it is a testament to nature’s richness, to the beauty of growth and decay, and to the fleeting, yet eternal, nature of the harvest. Still Life with Grapes speaks of abundance, nostalgia, and the simple pleasures of the earth’s bounty.
