This painting depicts the artists fellow conscientious objectors who were all part of the Non Combatant Corps.
The NCC was re-formed during August 1940. The corps was composed of conscripted men who had been registered as non-combatants by tribunals. Unlike in the Great War, there were also enlisted members of the NCC who had been deemed not physically competent for combatant service. This gave the Corps less of a stigma than it had twenty five years earlier. It was divided into 14 companies, commanded mostly by veteran officers of the First World War and reservists. During the course of the war 6,766 men served in the NCC, of whom 465 volunteered to specialise in bomb disposal, on attachment to the Royal Engineers but remaining in the NCC.
In 1944-45 some volunteered for transfer to the Royal Army Medical Corps, while retaining their non-combatant status, in order to join Parachute Field Ambulance units dropped over France on and after D-Day. Others worked in army stores, transport, agriculture, forestry, or on other projects 'not involving the handling of military material of an aggressive nature'. As in the First World War the NCC was part of the army, not a civilian unit.
During the war some members of the NCC renounced their conscientious objector status in order to serve in combat roles, sometimes as examples of German war crimes came to public attention, just as some men who had originally accepted call-up into the ordinary armed forces changed their minds, and claimed conscientious objection.
Gordon Scott
Gordon Scott was trained at the Royal College of Art (1934-38) under Gilbert Spencer, Alan Sorrell and Charles Mahoney. A reserved and highly principled man, during WWII he was a Conscientious Objector. In 1946 he joined the staff of Camberwell School of Art where he remained as a part-time teacher until 1980. He is remembered and revered by generations of Camberwell students, particularly for his lessons in drawing architecture.
Despite a lifelong, dedicated application to painting, Scott was reiticent about exhibiting. He did occasionally contribute to group shows, but his work was not seen in any great quantity until 2006, when, having turned 90, he had an exhibition at the Highgate Gallery.

Gordon Scott
Gordon Scott was trained at the RCA from 1934–38 under Gilbert Spencer, Alan Sorrell and Charles Mahoney. A reserved and highly principled man, during World War II, he was a conscientious objector, stationed at Bulford Camp on Salisbury Plain. His defined role is unknown, but during his time there, he produced several sketches and paintings of soldiers and other personnel who passed through the camp. In 1946, he joined the staff of Camberwell School of Art, where he remained as a part-time teacher until 1980. Scott is remembered and revered by generations of Camberwell students, particularly for his Saturday morning drawing classes amongst the architecturally stunning buildings of London, the Temple Church, the St Pancras hotel and a Nash terrace being often used as subjects. Despite a lifelong, dedicated application to painting, he was reticent about exhibiting. Scott's works have been shown at the Royal Academy, the London Group, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Cooling and Opix Galleries and the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, amongst others, but his work was not seen in any great quantity until 2006. Then, having turned 90, Scott had a solo exhibition at the Highgate Gallery.

William Gale exhibited a number of charming genre scene's in the Pre-Raphaelite style, of which the present is an exquisite example.
This work has a strong nautical theme as suggested by the title. Through the small window at the back of this interior room we glimpse the sea, seemingly calm and peaceful. Despite its appearance, the threat of sea is reminded to us with the poster over the bed inscribed with the phrase 'Man Overboard'. This is cleverly echoed by the toy sail boat that lies at an angle, tipped to one side on the bedcovers. As we examine this image of boy and mother one can also identify a picture mounted on the wall of a man in a sailors uniform...

This grand scene depicts the interior of Knole House, a country house and former archbishops palace. Situated within the 1,000 acre Knole Park the house ranks in the top five of England's largest houses occupying a total of four acres.
The majority of the canvas is given to a well furnished drawing room resplendent with various paintings, tapestries and furniture. To this day Knole House has one of the finest collections of 17th century English upholstered furniture in the world. Much of it was made for the royal palaces of the ruling Stuart dynasty and is of the highest quality. It is likely that the chair and footstools seen her originally came to Knole house as part of the vast collection put together by Charles, 6th Earl of Dorset.
This work has incredible intricate detail in all aspects of the space including the depiction of flowers in vases, a bird in a cage and adorned trinkets. On the armchair sits an English guittar, popular in Victorian Britain. The instrument is recognisable for its pear-shaped body, flat base and rather short neck.
A dog stands before an opened door leading further into the house. In the distance we are given just a glimpse of a lady and gentleman conversing at the window. From here a lovely flow of daylight floods into the rest of the scene making the whole work bright and airy. In the foreground on the windowsill is a music book with pages open and an untouched peach. This perhaps signifies the sudden rush of the young woman away from her resting place to meet the unexpected suitor outside.
