The Beaux-Arts central building of Denver Union Station stands under the night sky. Its iconic “Union Station Travel by Train†sign, glowing in bright orange neon and soft pink light shining through the windows, adds warmth to the scene. The impasto technique adds dimensions to this postcard-like image.
About the Artist
Artist Hadley Northrop draws inspiration from her San Francisco surroundings, particularly the city at night. Her glowing depictions of light sources evoke the hazy beauty of a late-night stroll or an out-of-focus photograph. “With blurry little reference images, rich colors, and a velvety texture, my oil paintings have a warm, inviting atmosphere—whether capturing convivial bar scenes or a lone caravan glowing in the night,†says Hadley. Her love for art began with her mother, a watercolorist, and she pursued it through college and beyond. After graduating from UCLA, she was uncertain about continuing her artistic path. Seeking a change, she moved to England on an artist’s visa and joined a group studio above a mechanic’s garage in Leeds. The cold made live modeling impractical, leading her to work from photographs—an approach that remains central to her practice today. Now based in San Francisco’s Mission District, she paints daily in her small studio, accompanied by her Boston terrier puppy. In addition to painting, Hadley is an avid sewer and takes fashion classes.
