Hiroshi Sato
"Lone" - Contemporary Figurative Oil Painting with Light and Shadow

2025

About the Item

Hiroshi Sato’s "Lone" (2025) is a masterful oil painting that captures a moment of quiet introspection within an interior space. Measuring 46 x 60 inches, this large-scale work exemplifies Sato’s signature approach to light, form, and spatial composition. A seated figure at a reception desk leans forward, lost in thought, while another figure stands by a sunlit window, gazing outward. The interplay of geometric abstraction and realism heightens the painting’s contemplative mood, with strong angular shadows and warm, diffused light creating an atmosphere of solitude and reflection. Sato’s technique is evident in his structured yet painterly brushwork, where the careful arrangement of color planes and value shifts define the space and its inhabitants. The cool interior tones contrast with the vibrant warmth of the sunlit exterior, subtly reinforcing the psychological and emotional undercurrents of the composition. An evocative contemporary figurative piece, "Lone" is an excellent acquisition for collectors of modern realism and narrative-based painting. This original oil painting is signed by the artist and unframed, allowing the buyer to select a presentation that best suits their space. Artist Bio & Statement: Hiroshi Sato was born September 1987 in Japan. From the age of three to fourteen he spent his childhood in Tanzania. While there, he recognized where he lived was not home, and where he called home was some place he hardly ever knew. From a very young age, he understood he was not a participant of his surroundings. Therefore, his role was of an observer. This recognition and his exposure to alternate cultures, class, wealth, language is his backdrop to his interest in perception and how it is explored in the singular image. He enrolled in the fine-arts program at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, graduating with a Bachelors and Masters in Fine Art. Hiroshi Sato is focused on contemporary realist oil painting. He is best known for paintings of figures in an interior environment. He draws influence from past and present artists including Vermeer, Degas, Andrew Wyeth, Euan Uglow, Hopper and Chuck Close. Sato’s work shows his interest in geometric design principles of the old masters and is currently exploring the simultaneous illusion of form and flatness in space. His goal is to portray, and better understand our various states of consciousness within ourselves through the visual medium. Hiroshi Sato’s work has been featured in various publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur, Juxtapoz Magazine, Visual Art Source and Art Business News Magazine.

"Double RT4" by Hiroshi Sato, Original Painting, Figure with Patterns
Located in Denver, CO
Hiroshi Sato's "Double RT4" (2024) is an original oil on canvas artwork, measuring 12 x 36 inches. Hiroshi Sato was born in Gamagori, Japan. From the age of three to fourteen Hiroshi Sato lived in Tanzania, East Africa. During this period his world could be separated into three places. The first was the inside of the house; filled with stories of his parents, books, and movies. The second, was the outside world of an alternate culture and landscape. The third was the place his culture was supposed to be, Japan. The third was a place that existed as a pseudo fictional place in his head, only confirmed to be real by brief visits to Japan once a year. Hiroshi Sato returned to Japan for high school, rearranging the three places around; the pseudo fiction becoming the real and the real becoming memory. Due to these turns of events, he would not fail to notice the only thing that stayed the same; the distance and interaction between our mind interfacing with the external world. He is interested in creating work that frame the moments of our life in which this idea reveals itself to ourselves.  The works are constructed in a way to echo that fact by using western painting (Richard Diebenkorn, Chuck Close, Edward Hopper, Matisse, Euan Uglow) methods, theories, and Japanese painting (Ito Shinsui, Hashimoto Kansetsu, Tsuchida Bakusen) compositional philosophies. The artwork is neither attempting to fully adhere or reject either, this is done to reflect the experience of continually being exposed to separate but parallel aesthetic tastes due to how and where he grew up. It is impossible for him to measure the difference in his personal preference for either philosophies of picture making. Hiroshi Sato’s work has been featured in various publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur, Juxtapoz Magazine...
