The artwork depicts a legendary destination celebrated for its nonstop wild parties and as a residence for renowned writers and actors during Hollywood's golden era. Built in 1913, the screen icon Alla Nazimova transformed this place into a hotel in 1926. Once standing across Sunset Boulevard from the famed Chateau Marmont, this historic location and epitome of California's Spanish Revival architecture met its demise in 1959, replaced by a parking lot.
About the Artist
Artist Mitchell Freifeld depicts architecture that evokes memory and nostalgia. Using a modernist approach, he highlights details that often fade into the background of familiarity. With his camera, he meticulously documents the world around him, using his shots as a reference for his art. "My works are the product of a process that is more intuitive than intellectual and a passion for simple, modern architecture and light," says Mitchell. After winning his first juried show at 10, Mitchell's lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist took root. A pivotal moment in 2001 prompted him to seize the chance and devote himself to art-making. Now, he dedicates most of his time to a compact studio within his garage in Portland, Oregon. Mitchell's life revolves entirely around his creative pursuits, taking pictures, and working seven days a week with paints and brushes.

"In the late afternoon, just after the golden hour, the backlights are on as well as all the lights in my friend's house," explains artist Mitchell Freifeld. "They have even turned on the light in their excellent example of a classic mid-century kidney-shaped swimming pool, so that everything glows all shades of blue on this midsummer's eve."
About the Artist
Mitchell Freifeld cannot remember a time when he did not draw and paint. He won his first juried show at age 10 and decided that someday, he'd be a 'real painter.' He settled in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early '70s and got involved in the burgeoning tech industry. From there, he moved to Portland upon accepting an information technology position. Artist Onelio Marrero depicts a mother and her child dropping coins into a fountain for good luck. The quiet moment is painted in brilliant morning light with dappled shadows in the foreground. Behind them lies a verdant backdrop of foliage around a stone church and a view of the distant city beyond. Onelio's rich textures and detailed brushwork greatly enhances the piece. Onelio Marrero paints city scenes of everyday life. Onelio will often paint from direct observation, or he will work from a combination of photographs and combine numerous sources into one piece.
