About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
A striking fusion of delicacy and opulence, Ornamental Poppies and Passion Fruits presents a mesmerizing balance between floral elegance and nature’s lush abundance. At the heart of the composition is a stunning blue and white china plate, its ornate gold rim adding a touch of refinement. The plate is piled with passion fruits, both whole and halved, their glowing amber interiors echoing the warmth of the scattered white poppies.
The poppies, with their soft petals and golden centers, provide a graceful contrast to the dense, textured fruit. Their ethereal presence introduces a sense of movement, as if caught in a fleeting moment before they drift away. Seen from a bird’s-eye perspective, the arrangement takes on a harmonious symmetry, where the circular shapes of the plate, fruit, and flowers intertwine in a rhythmic composition.
Set against a deep black background, the luminous colors shine with heightened intensity, turning this quiet still life into a striking visual statement. The painting speaks to the beauty of natural abundance, framed by human artistry in the form of fine china. This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
Artist Bio:
Niggy Dowler is a self-taught artist with a prodigious natural talent, working within the tradition of Classical Realism while bringing a fresh, contemporary perspective to the genre. Best known for her luminous still-life paintings, Niggy’s work captures the intrinsic beauty of everyday objects—most notably fruits overflowing from intricately patterned dishes—presented from a striking aerial perspective. Her meticulous attention to detail and mastery of rich, vibrant oils create compositions that are both timeless and captivating.
Niggy's journey into painting began as a form of meditation, rekindling a childhood passion. In 2012, an impulsive entry into the Wells Art Contemporary Open unexpectedly launched her career, and since then, her work has been in high demand. However, she produces only a limited number of canvases each year, making her pieces highly sought after.
Her still-life paintings merge classical techniques with modern influences, incorporating elements of natural and manmade beauty, as well as playful moments of life—most notably her signature bees. Inspired by Dutch Vanitas paintings and contemporary still-life photography, she explores contrasts between decay and beauty, transforming traditionally "ugly" subjects, such as overripe fruit and skulls, into strikingly elegant compositions.
Niggy has exhibited extensively in national exhibitions, including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Society of Wildlife Artists. Her work has been featured in several magazines, shortlisted and commended in national competitions, and is showcased annually at the Affordable Art Fairs.

'I aim to combine a modern perspective with classical techniques to create something beautiful and timeless. I love the luxury and the vitality that oils create, and in my work I always use vibrant colour and textures to draw the viewer in to my detailed and luscious compositions. In my still lives I combine these principles, elements of natural and manmade beauty with hidden moments of humour and decidedly non-still life (most popularly my bees!). Having enjoyed considerable success with these still lives I am now developing them further with inspiration from the Dutch Vanitas still lives and modern still life photography. I love making something that might initially seem ugly (rotten fruit, skulls) into something really beautiful.”- Niggy Dowler
