About the Item

VICNTE PALMAROLI y GONZÁLEZ Spanish, 1834 - 1896 PLAYING HIDE AND SEEK signed "V. Palmaroli" (lower right) oil on mahogany panel 17-3/4 x 13-1/2 inches (45 X 34 cm.) framed: 25-1/4 X 21-1/4 inches (64 X 53.7 cm.) PROVENANCE Leslie Hindman Inc., Auctionners Private Collector, Madrid Oil on table by Vicente Palmaroli, of intimate cut, which belongs to his works of genre manners, with a clearly everyday motive, the game of hide and seek, developed in an indoor scene between mother and daughter. Of very refined plastic based on precise and very detailed brushstrokes, with a smooth and refined chromaticism, based on blues, grays, whites and sepia, which further accentuate that intimacy of the scenes and bring it closer to the public. This type of work, small and medium format, gave its author fame and gesture, and had a great commercial reception in his time. Vicente Palmaroli was born in Zarzalejo, the son of Gaetano Palmaroli, an Italian painter and lithographer, who was his first teacher. After his father's death in 1853, he took over his official position at the royal art collections. He requested leave in 1857 to go to Rome and complete his education, using some surplus money from the collection fund. While there, he joined a group of Spanish painters who met at the Antico Caffè Greco, including Luis Álvarez Catalá, Dióscoro Puebla, José Casado del Alisal, Eduardo Rosales, Benet Mercadé, Marià Fortuny and Alejo Vera. He participated in the National Exhibition in 1862 with two works he created in Italy, winning a First-Class Medal. The following year, he returned to Italy and remained until 1866. After his return to the Court, he won a Gold Medal at the National Exhibition of 1867. That same year, he accompanied the Spanish delegation to the Exposition Universelle in Paris. While there, he met Ernest Meissonier, who would have an influence on his later work. Over the next few years, he would become a renowned portrait painter. In 1872, he was named a Professor at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. A year later, he settled in Paris and specialized in creating "tableautins"; small format paintings on amusing or pleasant themes designed to be hung in the home. In 1883, he moved to Rome to become Director of the Academia Española de Bellas Artes de Roma [es]. He returned to Madrid in 1894 when he was appointed Director of the Museo del Prado, a position he would hold until his death. Following a Royal directive, he set up a commission (consisting of himself, the Secretary and the museum's curators) to examine donated works and decide whether to accept or reject them, pursuant to maintaining the quality of the collection. He also oversaw maintenance, which included replacing the wooden roofs with metallic ones. A planned heating system was cancelled due to lack of funds. To help prevent fires, the employee's living quarters were moved to a new extension, built under the direction of architect Fernando Arbós y Tremanti. Most of the works added to the Prado during his tenure were later moved to the collection at the new Museo de Arte Moderno. He suffered a stroke while attending a theatrical performance, became an invalid, and died several months later in Madrid, aged 61. I

Large Antique Oil Painting by Chierici Entitled ‘The Mask’, 1869
Located in London, GB
Large antique oil painting by Chierici entitled ‘The Mask’, 1869 Italian, 1869 Canvas: Height 72cm, width 96cm Frame: Height 95cm, width 118cm, depth 8cm This large-scale oil painting is by the Italian artist Gaetano Chierici (1838-1920). Considered one of the greatest Italian genre painters of his time, Chierici is known for his charming familial scenes, rendered with an almost photographic level of realism. This painting is a version of one of his most favoured scenes, entitled La Maschera (‘The Mask’). A similar larger version by the artist dated to 1874 was sold at Christie’s, ‘19th Century European Art Sale’, 2013, lot 19 (£133,875). The painting depicts a humorous squabble between siblings, mediated by their mother. The young girl clings to her mother's leg in fear, whilst her brother taunts her with a frightening theatrical mask. The mother’s mouth hangs open, likely about to scold her son for his teasing. An assortment of objects are littered over the room, including shelled pea pods, cutlery, and paper scrapes, adding to the sense of chaos. Chierici effectively captures the tumultuous atmosphere, and the emphasis on the dynamics between the family members is typical of his work. Also to be noted are the exceptional technical qualities of the work. The pictorial realism of the figures and the surrounding kitchen is achieved through the multiple layers of thin paints and glazes, resulting in a lifelike sheen. Chierici’s use of colour is also superb, contrasting the browns and neutrals of the kitchen with pops of colour from the mother’s red headscarf and the teal cabinet...
