About the Item

Vilhelm Hammershoi 1864-1916, was a Danish painter. He predominantly painted interior scenes also a wide range of genre subjects with people in regular poses within the house. This painting is painted in the manner of Hammershoi but it is not by him but an unknown artist and the subject is a virtual trompe l'oeil of a window with a mountain view, the picture is unframed, we think it may have been painted for a theatrical stage, film set or similar. It is continental in production and may well be Danish as in the work of Hammershoi. The picture is on canvas and would probably be displayed on a wall unframed as is. Interior decorators generally delight in such work as it can inspire imaginative decoration.

Whitten's early work may loosely be termed geometric abstraction, but he is best known for his later representational paintings that combine his interest in architecture, invented machinery and toys.
