About the Item

Mexican-American contemporary visual artist and celebrated architect Javier Arizmendi-Kalb creates paintings that are comprised of both abstract and representational elements, and consider the natural world as it intersects with utilitarian design. 'Delta' — a diptych consisting of two abstract geometric canvases that are 4x5 feet each, and 4x 10 feet, or 48 x 120 inches when hung side by side — depicts a bird's-eye-view of the Delta as viewed by the artist during his frequent flights over California's Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta, or "Delta". Arizmendi-Kalb is a frequent traveler and keen observer of nature, who turned the curious and often fantastic geometric and vibrant central coast landscape (in his own backyard), into a significant body of abstract paintings. 'Delta' is from the series. The action painting conjures graceful mid-century design elements and a sense of deep, slow-moving blue water. The work is heavily layered and complex, and is created with mainly blue and white, and includes a line of warm reflective red. Oil paint and oil crayon on hand-stretched cotton canvas. The artist's initials are on the front of the canvas, and the work is signed, titled and dated Verso. Condition as new. Excellent. Unframed. Ready to hang. 48 x 120 inches (in two parts). Painted in 2017. Available for the first time in 2019, at Andra Norris Gallery in Burlingame, CA.

48 x 104 in. / 4 x 8.6 ft (2 panels) "Chromatic Fantasy" Large Oil on Linen
By Alexis Portilla
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a beautiful, abstract expressionist oil painting on linen by Alexis Portilla. This piece is in 2 panels. He obtained his Masters of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 1990. His bold linear lines, use of symbols, pictographs and strong colors create atmospheric abstracts. Influenced by the emotion of artistic expression in music, poetry and literature, the artist finds bold expression in color, lines and shapes that resemble pictographs, and texture. “Using simple forms and creating swathes of rich texture, Alexis Portilla builds atmospheric abstract paintings that convey a sense of time having passed. Brushy areas of color suggest the indeterminacy of memory, while bold linear forms speak for the present.” “In some of his smaller works, Portilla experimented with beeswax. Applying a smooth coat of wax over the surface, the artist sealed in his sparse, abstract forms, while leaving whole sections empty, the images hover in the wax, as if frozen in time, yet the pieces have a fresh, almost dewy look.” - Meredith Mendelsohn, Art News magazine review. The artist has shown in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His works have been commissioned by major corporations, universities and for private collections.
