About the Item

acrylic on canvas signature, title, year, dimension, medium, and arrows on verso. b. 1942, Elgin, OK “I don’t want the paintings to be like you’re looking at a landscape. I want them to feel like you’re in it.” says Jim Waid He creates abstract worlds saturated with color, layered with mark, filled with rhythm and movement, and intricately textured. His canvases barely contain the landscape painted upon them; lush with growth they invite the viewer to explore the space. Initially the paintings seem nonrepresentational, however, they slowly reveal themselves to be made up of organic textures, abstracted natural forms, and the desert landscape. They convey a sense of nature, without the specificity of traditional landscape painting. Jim Waid is considered one of Arizona’s most celebrated painters and is included in the public collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, NM; Palm Springs Desert Museum; Tucson Museum of Art; Phoenix Art Museum; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art; Arizona State University Art Museum; Indiana University Art Museum in Bloomington, as well as numerous other museums and corporations. Jim Waid currently lives and works in Tucson, Arizona.

Diffused Reflection

Located in Phoenix, AZ
acrylic on brushed aluminum b. 1950, Teaneck, New Jersey One of the most powerful tools an artist possesses is an ability to bridge the gap between what is considered real and what is illusion. This ability to alter or enhance reality is the very crux of what an artist is all about, and their success at attaining this is usually the defining element as to their stature in the field, as either an abstract or realist painter. Occasionally a painter is able to combine these two distinct disciplines and create an art form, which holds a viewer’s attention by balancing the paradox of the flat painted surface with the illusion of depth and space. "As a painter, it is important for me to address the concerns of painting what has been done-and what can I add to this. My work on aluminum is an attempt to use the qualities of refracted light, and have these qualities interact with the painting. The completed image is produced both by refracted light, created by the use of various wire brushes and paint airbrushed in transparent layers. Within this process about half of the image is produced by refracted light alone, simulating paint, and about half by paint." For over twenty years, David Kessler followed a Photo-Realist tradition, often depicting the Arizona desert landscape...

MOUNTAINSCAPE #4
By Linda Jacobson
Located in Palm Desert, CA
The Mountainscape series has been inspired by Jacobsons stay in the Alpes-Maritime in a small medieval village, Fanghetto, on the Italian/French border. The colors are soft, flowing and ethereal, creating a feeling of harmony, and a sanctuary for healing. Jacobson creates her paintings with many layers of acrylic paint on canvas, giving her work a luminous and translucent quality. The pastel colors and flowing compositional elements express the spiritual essence of nature. Mountainscape #4 is a mixed-media painting of oil paint over acrylic washes on gallery wrapped linen canvas. Linda Jacobson's paintings are lyrical abstractions inspired by her love of landscape and its elements: form, movement, light, and what she perceives to be its essence an energy or quality that goes beyond visual appearance. Born in Los Angeles, she received her BFA from California State College, Northridge, and graduated Summa cum Laude from the prestigious Art Center College of Design where she was mentored by pioneer California modernist Lorser Feitelson. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad, including MRG Fine Art, in Los Angeles; Gallerie Rohling, Berlin, Germany; California State University Channel Islands in Ventura; Karpeles Museum in Santa Barbara, California; BG Gallery in Santa Monica; George Lawson...

REFLECTIONS AT NIGHT, SANTORINI landscape abstract water
By Linda Jacobson
Located in Palm Desert, CA
For over a decade, Santorini has inspired Jacobson with its magical beauty and radiance. Many believe Santorini to be the location of the lost city of Atlantis. This painting expresses the eternal stillness, beauty and mystery of the island at night. The glittering lights of the villages crest the tops of the island and the reflections of the light shimmer on the dark turquoise waters of the Caldera. Jacobson creates her paintings with many layers of acrylic paint on canvas, giving her work a luminous and translucent quality. The vivid, saturated, jewel-like colors and strong compositional elements express the spiritual essence of nature. On gallery wrapped canvas.
