About the Item
John Baker’s “New Year’s Eve”, a 60 x 30 inch acrylic painting with collage on canvas, is painted in ruby reds, aquamarine blue-greens, and deep Prussian blues. Two women (or perhaps three) have allowed a small boy to stay up with them until midnight; he joins the raucous celebration by blowing on a yellow noise maker/party favor. Festivity is everywhere: in the Neo-Impressionist confetti, in the crisscrossing lights in the sky and in the revelers’ costumes, whose fragmentary discontinuities are echoed in the custom-designed “collage frame”. The calico skirt and the unadorned buildings suggest a small town America location, where, despite the decorated Christmas tree (cut off by the left edge), a darkness seems to outweigh the pyrotechnics and the narrow width of the canvas expresses confinement, like a place imagined by Sherwood Anderson: Winesburg Ohio! The painting is signed and dated on the reverse.

The sculptor’s constructivist method remains an influence on Baker’s collage process, but Baker’s artistic results are more sensual and emotional as he adds the elements of subtle color harmony and reliance on impulse.
