About the Item

Measurements Painting 11.75 x 15.75 inches Framed 18.5 x 23 inches Lillie May Nicholson (1884–1964) was an American Impressionist painter known for her vibrant landscapes, often featuring California scenery and wildflowers. Her work is characterized by loose brushwork, rich color palettes, and an emphasis on natural light, similar to the California Impressionist movement. The composition and use of blue, yellow, and green hues create a serene, luminous effect. Lillie May Nicholson (1884–1964) was an American painter renowned for her vibrant coastal landscapes and contributions to California Impressionism. Born on August 29, 1884, near Aromas, California, Nicholson's early life on her family's ranch fostered a deep connection to the natural beauty that would later define her artistic oeuvre. She graduated from the California State Normal School in San Jose in 1907. She subsequently taught in Hawaii (1908–1910) and Watsonville, California (1910–1911). During her teaching tenure in Watsonville, she studied watercolor techniques under L. Minnie Pardee. Her artistic journey continued in Kyoto, Japan (1911–1916), where she studied art under J. Taguchi, immersing herself in Eastern artistic traditions. Upon returning to California, Nicholson attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, studying under Gottardo Piazzoni. Her education culminated in a distinctive style characterized by vivid colors and loose horizontal brushstrokes, capturing the essence of California's coastal landscapes. From 1923 to 1938, Nicholson maintained a studio in Pacific Grove, California, where she specialized in coastal scenes and depictions of the fishing industry around Monterey. Her work is noted for its vibrant palette and impressionistic style, often portraying the interplay of light and color along the California coast. Nicholson's contributions to California Impressionism have solidified her place in American art history. Her works are held in esteemed collections, including the Monterey Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the White House Collection. Her ability to capture the fleeting beauty of California's coastal landscapes continues to resonate with art enthusiasts and collectors alike. The present work is in excellent condition and retains a beautiful period Stanford White style carved and 23K gold gilt frame, which adds great appeal to the total presentation.

View from the Train: Cityscape Oil Painting, View of Brooklyn
By Patty Neal
Located in Hudson, NY
View from the Train, 2019 24" X 40" x 1", oil on canvas This contemporary oil painting depicting a metropolitan view is the work of realist painter Patty Neal. The painting offers an intimate view of the city, as seen from a window, as it peeks from behind two metal structures. The dark browns and bright golds beautifully compliment the dusty blue, gray sky. Neal works highlight everyday city scenes, utilitarian infrastructure, and industrial or electrical apparatus. Artist statement: A life is an accumulation of experiences: visual, emotional and mental. By compartmentalizing these snippets of life we create boundaries. The focus of my work for many years has been the exploration of these various life aspects and how they are bound together or bound from each other. My process is often literally composed of boundaries. I make a painting by putting together multiple panels, or I segment a single panel into separate visual spaces. The works are made up of pieces or elements of city and landscape. While exploring the concepts of boundaries I play with visual “reality.” Sometimes I combine images that are upside down with those that are not and juxtapose images from different contexts. Literal boundaries, such as walls fences, expanses of water and highway median strips are also used. My intent is to invite viewers to look beyond these boundaries to see the possibilities of a connected whole. By Garrett Middaugh
Located in Houston, TX
Tractor, Central Texas Ranchland (near Fayetteville), 16x20, oil on panel The artist is a regional landscape painter working in oils and pastels whose subject matter varies from the mountains and desert of west Texas to the wetlands along the Texas coast, with a strong focus on Texas forests and trees. and to the Rocky Mountains The artist is in corporate and private collections around the world. Garrett Middaugh is a regional landscape painter working in oils and pastels whose subject matter varies from the mountains and desert of west Texas to the wetlands along the Texas coast, with a strong focus on Texas forests and trees. His palette is muted, stark, embracing the neutral colors of everyday experience. Avoiding the romantic, his landscapes are often painted at high noon or in the dead of winter. He paints in a fluid hyper realist style and feels most influenced by other landscape artists such as Neil Welliver and Rackstraw Downes. He sees landscape painting as a form of meditation, projecting outward, while solving equations and mapping the scene, realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances. "Landscape painting is for me a means of projecting outward, of meditating, examining the here and now of place. The process often feels similar to the satisfaction of solving math equations, intuitively realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances. For the most part I paint Texas. For several years I devoted a significant amount of time to painting its forests -- the complexity of forest alleviated my sense and the nearness and density of growth was comforting. I have also ventured into west Texas and Big Bend, and occasionally have attempted to capture the mesmerizing serenity of central Texas farm and ranchland." Garrett Middaugh Also shown is a new Texas tractor painting...
