About the Item

This delicate, contemporary botanical drawing is made with gold acrylic on cradled panel, painted black. The exploration of ephemerality, and the fragility of a wild celandine flower, its leaves, petals and buds are the focus of this painting by Margot Glass. The exquisite beauty of the flower, a member of the poppy family, is discovered and elevated through close examination and exquisite drawing by the artist. Initialed on recto, signed, dated and titled on verso. This series is the result of the artist's wildflower research conducted while hiking along the Pacific coast. Working on a dark ground allows the gleam and luster and delicate reflective silver and gold properties of the metallic medium to present as high tones against the black ground. Glass is interested in the tradition of using nature as idealized ornament in art and design while seeking to observe and represent these plants as accurately as possible in all their irregularity and imperfection. The metallic lines enhance the decorative qualities of the filigree patterns formed by the seed heads and leaf veining. Her compositions are tightly cropped to bring the subject as close to the edge of the picture plane as possible. Margot Glass’s work been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. Glass’s education includes studies in the Brown/RISD Exchange Program, Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, she earned a BA with Honors from Brown University. Brown then studied (textile design/pattern) at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, NY. The artist lives and works in Massachusetts.

Mighty oak on a gold-leaf background by Italian botanical artist
By Margherita Leoni
Located in Milan, IT
The artist has an elegant mark of nature, and the experience of working en plein air allows her to capture emotions that would otherwise not be possible. She is considered Italy's best botanical artist and collaborates with many botanical gardens where she also holds watercolour courses, a technique she masters like few contemporary artists. The artist herself prepared the background in real, stainless gold, which gives it a modern, warm surface that chameleonically matches the colours of the surrounding walls. Margherita Leoni was born and raised in Italy, however, she spent most of her adult life in San Paulo, Brazil. It was there that she started a collaboration with the botanical faculty of the local university, allowing her to develop interesting research in rare botanical species studies and drawings. For this reason, most of her artworks, illustrate Brasilian botanical species, both rare and common. The artist's mastery of watercolour allows her to take part in botanical expeditions where she paints in plein air. Given her exquisite watercolour technique and her extensive botanical knowledge, Margherita Leoni is considered the heir of Margaret Mee. Among her most important exhibitions, three of her artworks were selected by Shirley Sherwood...
