About the Item
This painting by Michelle Weddle consists of hard-edged geometric and curvilinear shapes of solid color. Light blues and greens are met by blocks of orange, pinks, and purples, and shapes of white tones break up the bold and bright colors. The painting's name, "Tropic," evokes thoughts of a hot summer day on a tropical beach.
Michelle received a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas, Austin in 2007, with concentrations in Painting, Drawing, Sculpture and Serigraphy. Early exhibit highlights include group shows in Denver and Dallas between 2008 and 2010, a solo show in Boulder, Colorado at the Dairy Center for the Arts in 2011, and additional group shows between 2012 and 2014 in Houston, Texas. The two major bodies of work produced during those years, totaling 30 large scale oil paintings have been purchased by collectors in both Colorado and Texas, while a series of 100 smaller works in acrylic and oil have been sold locally and shipped to locations around the United States.
More recently, in mid 2018, she returned to painting with a fresh perspective, venturing for the first time into abstraction.
In 2020, Michelle showed with Mirus Gallery and 40 West Gallery in Denver winning ‘Best in Show,’ and an ‘Artistic Award of Excellence,’ with 40 West. Michelle’s work was featured in the Spring 17 Edition of ArtMaze Magazine, an international publication produced in the UK, and was included in ‘I Like Your Work Podcast’s summer exhibition titled ‘Congruence,’ curated by Bridgette Mayer with Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Michelle’s work was selected for an online show curated by artist Charlie Roberts for GIFC Worldwide, and was included in another online show titled ‘Artwork from Home,’ featuring work by artists from around the world, created during the pandemic, with Art Gym Denver in July. Her work was also selected by Max and Tanner of ‘The Tax Collection,’ for special mention with Create Magazine, online and on social media in September. Three large scale pieces were exhibited in a second 40West Gallery ‘Abstracts’ show at Colorado Mills between September 2020 and February of 2021.

Contemporary Abstract Painting, "Graphic Splash" (blue, violet, peach)
By Debra Drexler
Located in New York, NY
A violet impasto stroke of color is positioned next to a raspberry violet form in this contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. The shapes create a layers of cut-out colors with cool blues, peach orange and yellows.
Debra Drexler maintains studios in both New York and Oahu, and her work is informed by her unique bi-coastal experience. In her luminous, large-scale abstract paintings, she brings the transcendent experience of the Hawaiian landscape to a New York audience. Through her New York based studio and curatorial practices, she is also deeply engaged in critical conversation surrounding new abstraction. She states “Abstraction takes us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. While our insistent digital projections can take us away from both our animal and spiritual nature, abstract painting reminds us again of what it means to be human. The corporality of the paint mirrors the flesh of the body and transports us into the timeless.”
Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. In contrast, the making and viewing of paintings remains a direct, engaging experience in Drexler's paintings. She aims to take us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. As a colorist, Debra Drexler provokes unexpected color relationships and creates spatial contradictions that come from those interactions. Some of her color choices reference the post digital experience with its highly saturated synthetic color. The luminosity and saturation also mirror the unique quality of light and tropical color interactions in Hawai’i, where Drexler also lives. Her work is driven by an athletic painting...

'Pink Orange Summit", Large Scale Abstract Painting
By Debra Drexler
Located in New York, NY
Hot pinks and tangerine orange intertwine in this gestural abstract painting by Debra Drexler. This painting is inspired by the intensity of light and colors in Hawaii, where the artist splits her time between there and New York City.
Debra Drexler maintains studios in both New York and Oahu, and her work is informed by her unique bi-coastal experience. Her work translates the inner experience into outer form through a vigorous athletic painterly process. Drexler has had over 30 solo exhibits and over 100 group exhibitions at galleries and museums in New York, Hawai’i, Australia, Berlin and across the states. New York, NY. In 2017, her two-person exhibition was reviewed in Whitehot Magazine and Arte Fuse. Her most recent solo New York exhibits were at Van Der Plas Gallery in 2015 and 2017. She had a solo exhibition at The Majestic Theater curated by The Dorado Project in Jersey City in 2016. Other recent New York solo exhibits include: Pool Art Fair, Chelsea Hotel Blue...
