About the Item
Madonna and Child Workshop of Andrea del Sarto, pseudonym of Andrea d'Agnolo di Francesco (Florence 1486 - 1530)
Attributable to Jacopo di Giovanni di Francesco, known as Jacone (Florence, 1492 - 1554)
Oil on panel (72 x 56 cm. - In frame 109 x 94 cm.)
Provenance: Sotheby's New York, 29.01.2016, Master Paintings Sale, lot 426, as Jacopo di Giovanni di Francesco, known as Jacone (Florence, 1492 - 1554) - estimate ($30,000 - $40,000) - LINK
The painting in question, which can be dated to the mid-sixteenth century, depicts the Madonna lovingly supporting the Infant Jesus with both hands. The infant, who looks directly at us with a knowing yet timid smile, is tenderly clinging to his mother, using her left leg for support. He appears distracted by our presence and his sudden twist brings the painting to life. The plastic style, incisive but formally harmonious and well balanced, allows us to categorise the painting as one of the most beautiful works of the Florentine Renaissance.
By dwelling on the details it is easy to trace the work back to the workshop of Andrea del Sarto (Florence 1486 - 1530), one of the most outstanding exponents of this period, defined by Vasari as a painter ‘without errors’, praising his formal perfection, speed and confidence of execution. His style, characterised by a notable compositional balance and a high level of formal control, had a great influence on 16th century Florentine painters, so much so that it was considered fundamental for the genesis of the ‘manner’, combining in an exceptionally harmonious way the pyramidal scheme typical of Raphael's Madonnas with the monumentality of the figures derived from Michelangelo.
Focusing on the refinement of the poses, especially that of the baby Jesus, and on the vivacity of the chromatic material, the sacredness of the image is softened by the spontaneous gestures between the two characters, which make one think of a scene from everyday life, rather than a religious image. The graceful expression of the child, who looks at the observer with a lively air, also testifies to the domestic destination of the work. In works like this, the new approach to sacred art was substantially contained, deeply immersed in the innovative spirit of the new Florentine ruling class, aimed at reconciling the religious aspect with the profane one.
Specifically, the painting in question, to be placed around the first half of the sixteenth century, was sold by Shoteby's New York (Master Paintings & Sculpture Day Sale - 29 January 2016), not yet restored, as attributed to Jacopo di Giovanni di Francesco, known as Jacone (Florence, 1492 - 1554), who trained in the workshop of Andrea del Sarto, of whom he was a close friend and collaborator. Jacone, who was an exponent of a unique and eccentric style of painting and was one of the most creative artists trained in Andrea del Sarto's studio, clearly shows in our painting the influence of his master Andrea del Sarto, but also that of his contemporaries, Rosso Fiorentino and Pontormo, who were also pupils of Del Sarto.
Although his identity as an artist is less defined than that of some of his contemporaries, Jacone was well known to Giorgio Vasari, who described in detail his dissolute lifestyle, as well as his fantastic graphic ability. Given the similarity of the drawing style and the use of colour, we are led to believe that the painting in question was painted by Jacone immediately after the death of his master Andrea, to whom he was very attached and whom he greatly admired, therefore around 1530-40 (as also hypothesised by Christie's), chronologically close to the large altarpiece of the Madonna and Child with Saints Francis and Sebastian (Pinacoteca Comunale, Città di Castello, Umbria), where the facial prototypes of the Virgin and Child are similarly distinct.
Vasari notes that the artist produced a number of depictions of the Madonna, which were quickly exported to France by expert Florentine mediators, no doubt to satisfy the taste in that country for such depictions, motivated by his master del Sarto's brief stay there in 1518-19.

Anton Maria Piola (Genoa, 1654 - 1715) circle
Madonna and Child
Genoese school of the second half of the 17th century
Oil on canvas
93 x 74 cm.- In antique frame 110 x 92 cm.
(Work with expertise by Dr. Arabella Cifani)
In the pleasing work proposed, depicting a classical Nativity scene, the Madonna is immortalised in adoration as she gently holds the sheet on which the Child is lying, with a gesture of protection and pride that facilitates an atmosphere of intimate recollection, in addition to the presence of three cherubs at the top.
The stylistic analysis of the canvas can easily be traced back to a painter of the Genoese school and active during the 17th century, specifically with the devotional works from the workshop of Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627-1703), an absolute protagonist of Genoese Baroque culture.
Piola was the owner of the most important city painting workshop of the time, known as 'Casa Piola', where his sons Paolo Gerolamo and Anton Maria also collaborated.
His production, which specialised in a type of highly decorative, profane and allegorical paintings, destined for the decoration of Genoese patrician palaces, also included a refined series of works of a religious nature.

Madonna Maria Sassoferrato Paint Oil on canvas Old master 18th Century Italian

Madonna with Sleeping Child
Follower of Giovan Battista Salvi known as 'il Sassoferrato' (1609 - 1685)
Roman painter 18th century
Oil on canvas
Measurements: canvas 64 x 50 cm, in frame 76 x 62 cm.
This delicate depiction of the Madonna in adoration of the Child exhibits all the human dimension and sweetness of the maternal atmosphere: Mary clasps the sleeping child to her in a tender embrace, which touches her cheek, enveloped and protected by the mantle and even a flap of the mother's veil.
The pictorial style and composition recall the ambit of Giovan Battista Salvi, the Sassoferrato, who distinguished himself expressly for this subject, with the Virgin immortalised in a humble and strongly earthly pose, depicted with simple white, red and blue colours and delicate plays of nuances on the faces and hands.
This iconographic prototype was so successful that it became the painting for countless works destined for devotion during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly appreciated for private commissions due to its marked gentleness and formal perfection, particularly of the faces.
Born in Marchigiano, Salvi developed his activity in Rome, following the dictates of the classicist sacred painting of the Bolognese school of Reni, Carracci and Domenichino, but succeeding in having an autonomous and therefore clearly distinguishable style.
In very good overall condition, there are some small scattered restorations and some unravelling of the painted surface. Framed in a beautiful gilded frame.

Madonna Scarsella Paint Oil on canvas Old master 16/17th Century Raffaello Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Ippolito Scarsella, known as Lo Scarsellino (Ferrara, around 1550 - 1620) workshop
Altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child, St. James the Greater and the donor in armour
Technique: oil on panel
Measurements: 93 x 72 cm./with frame 109 x 86 cm.
Provenance: Prato, Farsetti, auction of 28.10.2016, lot 261 (link)
A majestic Madonna in Glory occupies the upper register of the canvas, seated on a blanket of iridescent clouds surrounded by angels, flanked by a cherub who scatters flowers contained in a cornucopia towards the infant Christ as a sign of abundance, naked and supported with both hands from the mother.
In the lower part of the composition stands the figure of San Giacomo Maggiore, one of the twelve apostles, standing on the right side of the altarpiece, represented dressed in a humble tunic; one arm holds the open Gospel book, while the other holds a cross pilgrimage staff.
A particular aspect of the table is the presence in the central part, to indicate its importance, of the figure of the donor, kneeling on a cushion, with his hands joined in prayer and his face observing the Virgin in an attitude of devotion, while on the opposite lectern is placed a prayer book; depicted with the features of a young leader in armor, with a sword and a rich iridescent red cloak, elements which, combined with his authoritarian composure, enhance his ennoblement.
Unlike the medieval altarpieces, the knight is here included in the space of the painting and has proportionate dimensions to those of the other characters, returning to all intents and purposes in the sacred scene, with a pose that cannot but evoke the detail of the 'Montefeltro altarpiece' made by Piero della Francesca for Federico da Montefeltro, kneeling in front of the sacred group in the guise of a leader.
On the right, the view recedes into depth highlighting the background of an urban landscape set on a hill behind which a mountain range stands out, with the peculiarity of the arched aqueduct that runs along the entire landscape. Presumably among these expanses were the donor's own possessions and his hometown.
It is a quality table, imbued with the late Mannerist style still resistant in the second half of the 16th century, characterized by a 'sweet and affable religiosity, rendered through a manner of studied simplicity and grace', which highlights the unmistakable stylistic and chromatic connotations of the produced...
