About the Item
Nina Tichava's paintings are about relationships; she is interested in the interactions between materials and methods as well as the color and spatial relationships that naturally develop in process.
Using painting and printmaking techniques, she interweaves drawing and collage with a variety of media. Simultaneously painterly and constrained, her paintings are composed of complex layers, many of which are over-painted and concealed. A prominent element of her work is the application of thousands of beads of paint, painstakingly and individually painted with a brush and used to create screens and patterns. She describes her work as “abstract painting with botanical and architectural references”, as the pieces suggest natural forms (birds, leaves, branches), man made structures (buildings, windows, lights) and patterning both natural and designed (woven fabrics, strata of earth, pixels).
Her works are emotional and imperfect, and as objects they embody her response to things mass produced and idealized. The paintings are collections of moments from daily life: combined glimpses, thoughts, memories and objects. She is trying to describe not only what things look like, but also how they might feel.

By Liz Dexheimer
Located in Westport, CT
Liz Dexheimer’s abstract landscapes reveal her fascination with the illusory and transcendent qualities of light and atmosphere. Both serve as a source of inspiration for her work. She is interested in conveying a sense of place that goes beyond any particular location. In her recent paintings, she has been focusing also on the intangibility of the ethereal, the feeling of limitlessness and forever in the far view.
She de-constructs found man-made imagery as a point of departure, re-interpreting it to suggest natural light, reflection, what lies beyond. She has always translated everything into a more reductive state, regardless of her source of inspiration, eliminating anecdotal markers, distilling information to try to get at the essence, the idea of it
She is drawn to water imagery...
