About the Item

Paolo Guidotti (il Cavalier Borghese) (Italian, 1560-1629) "Cain and Abel" ca. 1610 Oil on Panel 44.5" x 58" inches framed 28" x 41.5" inches unframed Provenance: Private collection, Southern France This masterpiece "Cain and Abel" was acquired many years ago through a private collector in Southern France, first attributed by the specialist Stephen Pepper to the magnificent artist Annibale Carraci, and was exhibited at the Palazzo Pepol Campo Grande in Bologna, Italy. After a deeper analysis the attribution to Carraci was discarded and the final attribution came to Paolo Guidotti, this work has been seen by several experts and all agree with the given attribution the most recent by Dr. Michele Nicolaci which has published a book with our painting as reference. The work has been exhibited in different exhibitions and publications, one of them on May 28, 2016 in the Washington Post. The work was cleaned and restored by David Chesterman but a writing condition report has never been made. Paolo Guidotti, known as Il Borghese or Cavaliere Borghese, Italian painter and architect, active in Rome. As painter he was a representative of late Roman Mannerism. In 1610 he decorated the Sala della Felicità Eterna in the Palazzo Odescalchi Giustiniani in Bassano Romano in the province of Viterbo. His influence on painting in Lucca was important. Many of his architectural works, completed for Pope Sixtus V have been lost. He completed a series of sculptures for Pope Paul V, who allowed him to adopt the surname Borghese, and made him conservator of the Campidoglio and leader of the Accademia San Luca. Somewhat of a polymath, he made the preparations for the ornamentation surrounding the canonization in 1622 of Isidore the Labourer, Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Filippo Neri, and Saint Teresa of Ávila. He wrote an epic poem titled Gerusalemma Distrutta, concluding each eighth line with the same words of Gerusalemme liberata. He is said to have traveled to cemeteries at night to examine cadavers for drawing.

Hercules and Omphale Oil on panel, 52 x 41 cm According to legend, Hercules had to make atonement and became a slave to the Lydian queen Omphale. When she found out who her slave was, she married him. Falling for his mistress and made effeminate by the luxury of court life, the former hero allowed himself to become the laughing stock of the court. He dressed in women's clothes, spun wool and did other women's work, whereas Omphale wore his lion's skin and carried a wooden club. When the time of punishment was over, the hero realised his delusion and left Omphale. So far, the painting could not be clearly assigned to an artist. Nevertheless, it impresses with its fluid and convincing painting, whose colourfulness and conception are reminiscent of the Prague School around Bartholomäus Spranger. This work follows an engraving and an etching made by Michel Dorigny in 1643 after a design by Simon Vouet. It shows the same scene but the print differs in minor details from the present painting (see e.g. the head of the lion) and the treatment of the faces seems to be painted more detailed and refined.
