Oil on Canvas, 2018 Signed by the artist on the lower right, front. Unframed. This is an original work of art by mid-career artist Paul Balmer. The art of Paul Balmer is both unique in design and method. His bold canvases capture the essence of place. His color and textural use of paint, combined with an intentional naïveté make his work highly individual. Raised in South Africa, Balmer then studied art in Australia. Both places had a marked influence on his style and color...growing up amongst warm, expansive, ruddy-colored landscapes. The earthy tones and emotional spectrum of dawn and dusk that permeate his color schemes are unmistakably reminiscent of wild terrains. Balmer makes frequent trips to the West Coast. Napa Valley reminds him of the wineries in South Africa and is a constant source of inspiration. Balmer’s painting technique is assertive, utilizing several coats of oil. He scrapes, scores, and sands his panels, allowing traces of black under-painting and darker pigments to show through the surface. The results provide an acute sense of depth and tactility. Balmer delights viewers with a rare spontaneity and an uncommon handling of space. As part of their allure the paintings demonstrate a critical combination of thoughtfully balanced representation with unplanned abstraction. Balmer states his ambition: “…to make the work as abstract as possible without losing the essence of the scene.” Paul Balmer received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Meadowbank College, Sydney, Australia, in 1984. His work has been exhibited across the globe including solo exhibitions in New York; Boston; San Francisco; Chicago; London; Amsterdam; Rotterdam; Rome; Seoul; and Cape Town. His paintings are found in permanent private collections in America, Europe, and Africa. He currently resides in New Canaan, CT with his wife and two young children.
