About the Item

A painting by Peter Gerakaris. "Daphne III (Slap That Bass)" is an oil on canvas painting, executed in a vibrant palette primarily of deep blues, blues, black and gray with pops of red orange and pink. "Daphne III (Slap That Bass)" depicts an a woman, with long black hair, holding and umbrella and standing in an abstracted forest by contemporary artist Peter D. Gerakaris. Signed verso, "Peter D Gerakaris"Daphne Slap That Bass)" III. 2010 Provenance: Private Collection, New Hampshire Daphne I, as described in d'Art International Magazine, "“He [Gerakaris] presents…a transparent young woman (her apparel speaks of youth) under an umbrella, strolling through a psychedelic forest. Showing through her, the leaves and branches are bedizened with geometric patterns…calling to mind love and science; the nuts and bolts of our physical existence. The girl’s face is hidden by shadow and black locks of hair. This juxtaposition poses a thoughtful metaphysical rumination on the relationship of the natural world with the digital age.” - Christopher Hart Chambers, dArt International Magazine The artist, Peter Gerakaris' statement on the Daphne Series, "Confronting the viewer directly from the anonymity of her cosmic veil, “Daphne” is a postmodern muse for the digital age. While these Asian-themed, hand-painted vignettes pay homage to the Greek myth that inspired the series, they simultaneously subvert it by employing a surreal global aesthetic. By placing the enigmatic figure in an imaginary neon forest, we enter a brave new world where artificial Nature and hypercoherent Culture converge."
