As one of the youngest and considered by many to be one of the most gifted WPA. Artists, Agnes Mills continued producing and innovating as a fine artist throughout her life. “She draws like an angel,” remarked Hans Hoffman. Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, David Siqueiros, Hans Hoffman, Mies Van Der Roe, Krishna Reddy, E. S. Hayter, and Kimon Nikolaides supported her vision of “creating the sense of motion... in a fugue-like rhythm” in oils, pen and brush, lithography, viscosity and further printmaking techniques, bronze casting, welding, murals, frescos, animation, batik and computer drawing.
As Resident Artist for the Alwyn Nikolais Dance Company for over a quarter century, and rehearsal artist at Alvin Ailey, Paul Taylor, Elisa Monte, Yoriko Kikuchi, and Jacob’s Pillow companies, her paintings, prints, sculpture and drawings of the moving figure were acclaimed at Lincoln Center, New York Public Library, City Center Gallery, and numerous universities and galleries throughout the area.
Agnes Mills created art and continued to explore new medium up until shortly before her death in 2008. Eight years earlier, she wrote of her on-going connection: “Even the trees and the skies dance for me… and things and people, young and old, are still beautiful and challenging.”

Raised in an orthodox Jewish family in Russia, Mane-Katz was born in the Ukraine and became an early 20th-century artist, known especially for portraits and paintings with Jewish themes. From childhood, he had been influenced by stories of Jewish mysticism, which was reflected in his paintings.
He had a peripatetic life between Russia, France, Israel, and America. He first studied art in Kiev at the Beaux Arts Academy, and in 1913, went to Paris where he associated with Chaim Soutine and Marc Chagall and continued his art studies there at the Beaux Arts Academy.
During World War I, he tried to join the Foreign Legion but was rejected because he was too short. He went back in Russia again, this time joining the Soviet Revolution but rejected the cause because he was so horrified by Josef Stalin. He worked briefly for the Russian ballets, and in 1921, he returned to Paris where in 1927 he took French citizenship. For the next twelve years, he traveled widely, showing his art work and doing many paintings.
In 1939, as World War II was breaking out, he was drafted by the French and then was taken prisoner by the Germans. He escaped and went to the United States and remained there until 1945, exhibiting his paintings at Katia Granoff Gallery and Wildenstein Gallery. After the war, he returned to Paris where he had exhibited in the Salons. In Paris to the end of his career, he worked happily, painting hundreds of portraits of rabbis...

Sir Francis Dicksee Portrait, c. 1900

Sir Francis Dicksee (English, 1853-1928)
Untitled (Portrait of a Woman), c. 1900
Oil on canvas; period frame
Sight: 13 1/4 in.
Framed: 21 1/8 x 21 1/8 x 3 3/8 in.
Frank Dicksee was a member of a noted artistic family, his father, brother, and sister Margaret were all well-known painters, and the family lived in the Bloomsbury area of London. He was initially trained by his father, before entering the Royal Academy schools in 1870. Amongst the visiting lecturers who trained him, were the famous senior academicians Leighton [1830-1896] and Millais [1829-1896].
Dicksee was a star student, earning many distinctions and medals. Like many other artists of the day his early career was largely spent in book illustration, as well as some stained glass window design. He started exhibiting at the RA in the mid 1870s, and also exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, though his real base was always the Academy. Dicksee made his reputation with Harmony, exhibited at the Academy in 1877, and bought by the Chantry Bequest.
Frank Dicksee was elected ARA in 1881, and became a full RA ten years later. Many of his pictures were of dramatic historical and legendary scenes. He also was a noted painter of elegant, highly-finished portraits of fashionable women, which of course helped to bring him material success. Many of these portraits are so beautiful, it is really difficult to disapprove of them - happy was the fashionable lady whose portrait was painted by Dicksee! He also painted landscapes.
Dicksee lived in St John's Wood, and remained a bachelor. He was, of course, one of the nineteenth century artists who outlived his time, and was, to his credit, very unhappy with developments in the early twentieth century. Rather surprisingly, Dicksee was elected President of the Royal Academy in 1924, fulfilling the role with panache and tact. Physically he was a tall, good-looking, patrician figure, with a charming easy-going manner. Like his predecessor but one Edward Poynter...
