About the Item

Behold a mid-century marvel by André Minaux, a titan of the French School whose stylized Social Realist visions continue to captivate the art world. Painted in 1948, “Femme et Homards” is an oil-on-canvas triumph, its commanding 57” x 38” canvas (framed to 62.25” x 43.5”) radiating presence and intrigue. A young woman cradles a lobster with quiet intensity, while two more perch on a counter before her—a scene alive with deep greens and blue-greens that shimmer across the lobsters and backdrop, offset by her earthy browns and olives. This is no ordinary portrait; it’s a bold dialogue between humanity and nature, rendered with Minaux’s masterful hand. This monumental work hails from the esteemed John Herron Museum of Art, deaccessioned via the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, where it was acquired in 1962 and showcased in the landmark exhibition New Accessions, U.S.A. (June 27 - September 12, 1962). A label on the verso preserves its storied past, a testament to its museum-worthy stature. Trained under Maurice Bianchon at Paris’ L’École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and shaped by the revolutionary André Lhote, Minaux joined the ranks of mid-century luminaries like Genis, Bardone, and Cathelin. His legacy endures in collections worldwide, and this piece is a rare chance to own his genius. Framed in a substantial 62.25” x 43.5” x 3” setting, it’s a showstopper—perfect for a grand stairwell, dining room, or collector’s gallery wall. The 70-year-old canvas remains in very good condition, its subtle scuffs and cracking (see vivid photos) a patina of authenticity that enhances its character. The frame, with minor nicks and repairs, presents beautifully, ready to hang and transform any space. Priced at $5135 this is a collector’s prize—museum provenance, monumental scale, and Minaux’s signature style converge in a work that won’t linger. For the discerning 1stdibs buyer seeking a statement piece with soul and history, “Femme et Homards” beckons. Act swiftly to claim this treasure from a defining voice of 20th-century French art.

Roger Marcel Limouse, (Algerian/French 1894 - 1989) Still Life, October 1939, Oil on canvas. Signed upper right and marked Oct 39 on back. Greens, Blues, and Yellow/Browns prevail in this still life of a table with fruits, cake, and a candle. Nude is painted verso on stretched canvas under frame. Frame 24.5 x 28.875 x 1.625, Canvas 21.875 x 23.875 A student of Paul Albert Laurens (1870-1934) at the Académie Julian, his figurative work, very colorful, with powerful and stripped down forms, made him one of the last representatives of Fauvism and the eldest of the group of Painters of Poetic Reality. He belongs to the School of Paris. In 1943, Jacques de Laprade dedicated a book to Roger Limouse in the collection "The Masters of Tomorrow" directed by Francis Carco. He writes, "One of the characteristics of this personality is strength. There is nothing in Limouse that lacks relief. This small and extremely vigorous man seduces by his direct and dru language, by his deep conviction, by the picturesque of his stories, by his very life which testifies to his energy. In 1948, Roger Limouse was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (Professor at the School of Fine Arts). He held this position until 1964. In 1949, the journalist Gisèle d'Assailly (1904-1969) devoted a book "With the Painters of Poetic Reality" to eight friendly painters, supporters of a colorful and intimate figurative painting of French inspiration, Maurice Brianchon, Christian Caillard...
