About
Oil painting on canvas depicting Portrait of a young Cantor, attributed to Anthoni Schoonjans (1655 - 1726).
The portrayed subject shows himself to the public with his hairstyle disheveled by a gust of wind that has just ruffled his hair, moved the collar of his giubba ( a baroque jacket), and the collar of his shirt, while holding the sheet of the score from which he leaves the author reveals some letters in hardly distinguishable capital letters.
The expression that the young singer assumes, with his mouth open in the act of taking the right singing intonation and the gaze turned upwards, leaves the viewer doubtful whether the young man with that singular look is looking for the perfect note or is in ecstasy.
The Cantore wears a damask farsetto (ancient male jacket) with puffed sleeves, from which emerges a shirt with a long and soft collar, tightened at the waist by a fusciacca (ancient wide band of wool).
The left hand shines through the drapery under the jacket, giving the feeling of a somewhat relaxed setting, as if the young man was improvising a song with his hand in his pocket and his right side resting with his elbow on a balustrade.
The forearm, protruding, casually wraps a soft woolly fabric, probably a cape, which falls copiously forward.
The right, gripped to hold a sheet of paper, sports a frayed cuff that matches the collar and lapel.
Given the attribution hypothesis, the work can be attributed with certainty to the hand of the Flemish painter Anthoni Schoonjans known as Parhasius, in fact it finds many similarities with certain works by the painter, such as "The Concert" in a private collection, in which the model for the figure central of the painting appears to be the same as our beautiful canvas.
Anthoni Schoonjans, nicknamed Parhasius, after training in Antwerp he had an international career. He moved in Rome where he familiarised himself with the Italian Baroque. He was a court painter in Vienna of Emperor Leopold I in 1695 , in Copenhagen, invited by the Danish Court to paint the portraits of the Royal Family, in Berlin, apparently at the invitation of Queen Sophie Charlotte of Prussia, and Dusseldorf. To work at the court of Johann Wilhelm II.
The painting is in a good state of conservation, with some slight restorations scattered between the cantor's doublet and the light background of the work.
