The Young Shepherdess by Charles Amable Lenoir (1860-1926) Oil on canvas 48 x 32 inches unframed (121.92 x 81.28 cm.) 58 ½ x 42 ¾ inches framed (148.59 x 108.585 cm) Signed on bottom right Description: Charles-Amable Lenoir was a French painter who was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and the Academie Julian, where he studied classical styles of painting, particularly in the context of mythological and historical scenes. Lenoir received two Prix de Rome awards for his use of biblical subject matter and his adherence to a classical style. In this masterful oil painting, Charles-Amable Lenoir creates a view of feminine beauty in a fully rural and natural setting. The figure, seemingly anonymous, is painted in warm tones, her figure set against a serene background populated by sheep, flowers, and gnarled trees, all set against a pale pink sky. As viewers, we are stuck between dawn and dusk, with a woman, clothed and surrounded by her profession, staring directly back at us with an alluring expression.
