About the Item

Pair of 17th century British Portraits, James and William Stapleton, 2nd and 3rd Baronet Stapleton of the Leeward Islands, at the ages of 11 and 8, ca 1685 This fine pair of portraits has remarkably stood the test of time and remained together during the almost 350 years since they were created. They are presumed to depict the brothers James and William Stapleton, the 2nd and 3rd Baronet of the Leeward Islands and will certainly bring some grandeur to wherever they are hung. James was born on September 24th 1672 and William on November 14th 1674, their mother was Anne Russell and their father was Sir William Stapleton, 1st Baronet (Unknown – 3 August 1686), an Irish colonial administrator and planter who served as the governor of the Leeward Islands from 1671 to 1686. Sir William (1st Baronet) was born in Ireland to a family of Norman descent and as a Royalist during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, followed Charles II into exile in France. Returning to England as part of the Stuart Restoration of 1660, William, as an English Army officer, travelled to the England's colonies in the West Indies in 1667, where he was granted the rank of lieutenant colonel; the governor of Barbados, Lord Willoughby, dispatched him to the Leeward Islands. The next year, he was appointed Deputy Governor of Montserrat, and in 1671 William became the first governor of the Leeward Islands. The same year, he married Anne Russell, the daughter of Colonel Randolph Russell, a military officer and plantation owner based in Nevis, which brought William into a network of locally established planter families. On 20 December 1679, William was awarded a baronetcy by The Crown; the Stapleton baronetcy became extinct in 1995 after the 10th baronet left no male heir. After Williams passing in 1668, James succeeded him as the 2nd Baronet (depicted in our pair of portraits as the sitter to the right), after his passing, the baronetcy was then passed to his brother William, who became the 3rd Baronet (depicted to the left); and Miles. The portraits have an inscription on the front with the ages of James and William, they were 8 and 11 when the portraits were painted. The portraits are relined by have an inscription on the stretcher "3rd Baronet Stapleton", which could indicate that they were in the possession of William when the baronetcy was passed down to him and they might have remained together and been passed on through that bloodline for some generations. Provenance: Private collection of an Englishman living in Belgium Each canvas measures ca 74 by 61 cms and with the frame 89 by 76 cms. These works will only be sold as a pair and will hopefully remain together for many more generations.
