About the Item

Clyde Singer was a master at capturing the moments, small and significant in everyday American life. This painting, "Calder Sculpture in Lincoln Center", is a glimpse of an ordinary moment traversing New York City while it also pays homage to the revered artist and sculptor Alexander Calder. Singer often liked to reference the work of other artists in his paintings. Singer painted this image in 1977, over a decade after the Calder sculpture "Le Guichet" was installed at Lincoln Center. The large steel-plate stabile created by Calder in 1963 is located on the plaza near the Vivian Beaumont Theater and features an irregularly shaped hole representing a ticket window, which visitors often pass through. A photo of Calder overseeing the installation of the sculpture is shown in the description of this work. An accomplished American Scene painter, Singer successfully captured everyday life during his long career. Born in Malvern, Ohio, forty miles south of Akron, Clyde Singer became known for his regionalist paintings in oil and watercolor of everyday landscapes and people. In 1933, he was awarded a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York. It was during the Depression, and he lived a Spartan existence. His teachers included John Steuert Curry, Thomas Hart Benton, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and Ivan Olinsky. Adopting the Social Realist style, he tried to paint in the same locations as George Bellows and John Sloan, and he painted many scenes of the interior of McSorley's famous saloon that Sloan had depicted. He had a long history with the Butler Institute in Youngstown, OH. This oil on canvas is signed and dated to lower right ‘C. Singer 1977’. Signed, titled and dated to verso ‘Calder Sculpture in Lincoln Center Clyde Singer 1977’. Framed 34 x 35 Inches Visable Canvas 29.13 x 29.92 Inches Framed in a wide pickled finish framed artist frame.
