About the Item
"Dark Self" is a post modern, oil on linen painting. It depicts a man in a very dark room, barely visible.
The viewer continues to search for Yektai’s image in “Dark Self” which is only one of a large series of what he calls the “Dark Self-Portraits,” inspired by the many celebrated portraits from Rembrandt. By adding a thin layer of stand oil, a sheen overcomes the surface, causing an obfuscating glare to what is already very obscure. The viewer is forced to move around the painting, catching glimpses of the artist’s image in fragments. Is the artist afraid to show his vulnerable self? Or does the viewer need to try to earn admittance to his private self? Perhaps privacy is paramount, which is a reasonable boundary for anyone to draw.

Darius Yektai was born in Southampton NY, in 1973. He lives and works out of his home and studio in Sag Harbor. He grew up in a cultural home of art and artists, with his Greek-American Mother, and his Father, Manoucher Yektai, an Iranian who emigrated to the US after the Second World War, was a prominent Hamptons AbEx painter. Darius has picked up some traits from his father but pushes even further into what is now completely his-own.
Darius' most recent body of work is bright, colorful, with oil and acrylic paints laid on thick. He's creating sculptural paintings that can't be read from left to right, they need to be examined from surface to base, from section to section, and then overall as an encompassing whole.

Darius Yektai was born in Southampton, New York, in 1973. He lives and works out of his home and studio in Sag Harbor. Darius grew up in a cultural home of art and artists, with his Greek-American mother and his father, Manoucher Yektai, an Iranian who emigrated to the United States after the Second World War. Manoucher was a prominent Hamptons Abstract Expressionist painter. Darius has picked up some traits from his father but pushes even further into what is now completely his own.

"The Kiss" brings to mind Gustav Klimt's famous 1908 painting of the same name but instead of an abstracted gold background, Astone creates a mysterious creature enveloping and suspending the figure in mid-air. The dark monster looks ominous until you notice the nude figure leaning into her partner, her hands lightly caressing or leaning on the the amorphous creature. Her body is relaxed and her eyes closed. As a classical artist who paints the nude figure everyday, Astone is masterful at depicting women at ease in their natural bodies rather than women self-conscious of their nudity—posing but fearful of exploitation at the same time—a theme in art history that continues today.
Some of the sweeping strokes of black are inspired by Japanese paintings techniques, and on the lighter areas there are rain drop falling from a blue-grey cloud in the background.
