Antique Oil Painting (pair) Jovial Monk with a Drink Attributed to Eduard VON GRÜTZNER (XIX - XX) Medium: Oil on Panel Dimensions: Framed: 37 x 30 cm Artwork: 27 x 21 cm Framed 38 x 31 cm Flat 27 x 22 cm Style: Traditional European Genre Painting This charming oil paintings, attributed to Eduard VON GRÜTZNER, depicts a jovial, cheerful monk raising a glass in a toast. The composition reflects the long-standing European tradition of genre painting, capturing moments of everyday life with warmth and humor. The subject, dressed in a flowing brown robe and wearing a Renaissance-style beret, exudes an air of contentment and mirth, making this work a delightful representation of the age-old connection between monastic life and brewing culture. Executed in oil on panel, the painting exhibits fine attention to detail, particularly in the expressive facial features and rich textures of the monk’s clothing. The deep blue background contrasts beautifully with the warm tones of the figure, creating a striking visual impact. This type of subject matter was popular in 19th and early 20th-century European art, often appearing in German, Flemish, and Dutch tavern scenes, celebrating life’s simple pleasures. Housed in an ornate gold-toned period-style frame with intricate floral detailing, this piece is perfect for collectors of vintage genre paintings, European tavern scenes, or unique decorative artworks. The artist skillfully employs fine brushwork, capturing the soft textures of the monk’s robe and the gleam of his glass. The deep blue-green background contrasts beautifully with the warm hues of the figure, enhancing the composition’s depth and vibrancy. The painting is housed in an elegant gold-toned period-style frame with intricate floral detailing, complementing its classic aesthetic.

Portrait of a girl with a rose and a red coral necklace (c. 1631)
Located in Amsterdam, NL
David Finsonius (Veere 1597- Bergen op Zoom 1646/1648) Portrait of a girl with a rose and a red coral necklace With traces of the artist’s signature and annotated AETATIS S.V. 2 1⁄2 Ao 1631 Oil on panel, H. 104.5 x 79.5 cm Provenance: Purchased by Jonkheer Helenus Marius Speelman (1857-1909), Kasteel de Wittenburg; thence by descent The work shows a strong resemblance to a portrait by Finsonius in the North Brabant Museum. This signed and dated "Girl with Basket and Cherries" (Inv. 15529), was painted just a year later, in 1632. Not only are the paintings remarkably similar in overall size and format, in painting style, and in the positioning of the girls in full length in their white lace dresses. They are also connected by the iconographic scheme of the respective coral necklaces, each with a gold memorial medal hanging from it. Although they are of course individuals, the faces are very similar in their depictions of features such as eyes, nose, and lips. This points to the same technique applied by the same painter. Finally, the handwriting is almost the same on the works by Finsonius known so far. About the painter, David Finson named 'Finsonius' (related to the better-known Louis Finson...
