About the Item

Émile Eisman-Semenowsky French/Polish, (1857-1911) Eastern Beauty Oil on panel, oval, signed & inscribed Paris Image size: 10.25 inches x 8.25 inches (oval) Size including frame: 18 inches x 15 inches A charming oval portrait of a young woman by Émile Eisman-Semenowsky. The woman, who is dressed in traditional costume of Balkan origin, is shown wearing a ribbon headdress decorated with gold coins over flowing hair. A matching gold coin necklace with a gold crescent is depicted around her neck, whilst at her ears can be seen gold hoops. The model bears a striking similarity to those who appear in other works by the artist and could well be one in the same. Émile Eisman-Semenowsky was born Emile Eismann on 19 September, 1853 in St Petersburg, Russia to Jean Eismann and Marie Semenovoski. He studied art outside his native country and in the early 1880’s moved to Paris. Whilst there, he became an assistant to the Belgian artist Jan Van Beers (1852-1927). Under Van Beers he helped produced portraits, mostly of fashionable women which were then finished off by Van Beers. After working for him for a number of years he left to pursue a career on his own and started specialising in romantic Oriental style portraits aimed at the Parisian middle class. Many of his works featured young women in traditional costume such as this lovely example. As well as portraits, he also painted a number of genre and historical scenes. Eisman-Semenowsky began exhibiting in Paris in 1883 and also at other cities in France including Strasbourg in 1884 and Grenoble in 1904. As well as exhibiting in France, he also exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1900 with works entitled Spring Time and After the Dance. His works are highly popular and can be found in many private and public art collections including the Manchester City Art Gallery. Presentation: The painting is housed its original period gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

19th Century genre oil painting of a girl with flowers
By Jane Maria Bowkett
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Jane Maria Bowkett British, (1837-1891) Collecting Flowers Oil on canvas, signed with monogram Image size: 23.5 inches x 17.75 inches Size including frame: 29.25 inches x 23.5 inches A highly appealing genre painting of a young girl holding flowers by Jane Maria Bowkett. The girl is posed in a wild flower meadow in front of a wooded area and wears a white lace dress with a pink sash. On her head is a yellow straw hat decorated with white feathers and a ribbon. She is shown gripping the brim of her bonnet with one hand whilst holding a posy of flowers in the other. The girl bears a resemblance to the models featured in some of the artist's other paintings and could well have been a family member. Jane Maria Bowkett was a figure and genre painter born in Poplar, London on 17 September, 1837, the eldest child of Thomas Edward Bowkett and Jane Bowkett (nèe Watkinson). The family lived at East India Road where he father practiced as a surgeon, later becoming a doctor and was involved in the Chartist movement. Three of her sisters, Eliza Martha Bowkett (1839-1867), Jessie Undine Bowkett (1861-1886) and Leila Matilda Bowkett (1853-1924) also became artists. She attended the Government School of Design (now Royal College of Art) and in 1858 began her exhibiting career at the Society of Female Artist. In 1860, she started exhibiting at the British Institution and a year later made her debut at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. As well as exhibiting in London, she also exhibited more widely at the Birmingham Society of Artists, Royal Scottish Academy, Bristol Academy of Art and the Brighton Art Society. Most of her paintings were genre scenes featuring woman and children in a mixture of both interior and landscape settings. Her work also included a number of beach and coastal paintings. She married the still life and landscape artist Charles Stuart on 7 February, 1862 at All Saints Church in West Ham. Although married, she continued exhibiting under her maiden name. The couple spent the first years of their married life living in Stepney Causeway where they started a family. One of their sons Charles Edward Gordon...

Pair of 19th Century portrait oil paintings of Italian women
By Federico Andreotti
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
***PLEASE NOTE: EACH PAINTING INCLUDING THE FRAME MEASURES 16.75 INCHES X 14.5 INCHES*** Federico Andreotti Italian, (1847-1930) A Bouquet of Flowers & A Fine Vintage Oil on canvas, pair, both signed Image size: 12 inches x 9.75 inches (each) Size including frame: 16.75 inches x 14.5 inches (each) A delightful pair of three quarter length portraits of Italian women by Federico Andreotti. The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles. Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879. During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co. He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum. Presentation: The paintings are housed in new, English made gilt frames which are in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, these works are offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art
