About the Item
In life, so much is a matter of timing. German and English portraitist Fritz von Kamptz signed and dated this picture in 1915 at age 49 when he was at the height of his powers. Having trained in his native Germany at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, he moved to England in 1896. But on August 4, 1914, World War I erupted between his native and his adopted countries. Remarkably, Von Kamptz was called upon by this unknown British officer to produce what was likely commissioned for the family just prior to the sitter’s departure for combat, perhaps never to come back. And for years it would have hung in the family home in a frame topped by a shield insignia, as mysterious today as the identity of the sitter. Unsurprisingly given the war's aftermath, the artist eventually returned to Germany, dying in the idyllic Bavarian Alpine village of Bad Hindelang in 1938 at age 72, on the eve of yet another global conflagration.
