About the Item

The Portrait of a Bearded Man is an early work by Swedish artist Rune Kurt Haries Lagerbrink, who occasionally signed his works as "R. Lager." Painted in oil on cardboard. The old frame was dated 1945 when made, it has now been fitted with a new frame. The portrait likely originates from the early 1940s. The composition is executed in expressive violet, blue, green, and brown-pink tones, capturing a contemplative and intimate study of character. This use of color and emotional depth is typical of Lagerbrink’s early style, which has been described as expressive and visionary. Rune Lagerbrink began his artistic journey after completing school in Borås and Gothenburg. At the age of 18, he traveled to Italy to pursue independent art studies. Upon returning to Gothenburg, he was introduced to the Gothenburg Colourists and was deeply influenced by artists such as Carl Kylberg and Ivan Ivarson. In the early 1950s, he embarked on study trips to major European art centers and spent almost a year in Egypt, experiences that greatly enriched his artistic perspective. Lagerbrink exhibited both solo and with his group “Grupp,” alongside three fellow artists, in cities such as Kristianstad, Stockholm, Borås, Helsingborg, and Växjö. He also took part in several group exhibitions organized by the Christian Art Association (Föreningen Kristen Konst). His early work, including this portrait, reflects his interest in portraying the human experience, touching on themes of life and death. In later years, his subjects shifted to include clowns, musicians, harlequins, jesters, and mood-driven landscapes. Rune Lagerbrink is represented in the Norrköping Art Museum. This early portrait is a valuable piece within Lagerbrink’s oeuvre, capturing both a specific moment in his development as an artist and the expressive, visionary qualities that marked his early career.
