19th Century, Portrait of a Young Girl

ca. 1890

About the Item

A young girl with a bob haircut, gazing downward, wrapped in a shawl or blanket. A red hairband adorns her head. Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard, this captivating portrait, painted around 1880–1890, though unsigned, exhibits notable similarities in technique and color choices to the portraiture of Finnish master painter Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946). Faint traces of a signature are possibly visible on the right shoulder. On the reverse side, there is a label from Sala Gaspar, one of Spain's most renowned art galleries, Established in 1909 as a frame and mirror shop, it evolved to an important art scene exhibiting many important artists of the time, among those where Picasso, Miró, and Dalí, Braque, Chagall, Calder and many others Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946), in Helsinki, Finland. Her artistic journey began early; at the age of four, after a hip injury confined her to bed, she started drawing with pencils given by her father. Recognizing her talent, she was enrolled in the Finnish Art Society's Drawing School at just eleven years old. Schjerfbeck's early works were influenced by French Realism and Naturalism, reflecting her studies in Paris under the tutelage of artists like Jean-Léon Gérôme. In the 1880s and 1890s, Schjerfbeck's portraiture evolved, showcasing a delicate balance between realism and impressionism. Her subjects often exuded a melancholic introspection, rendered with subtle color palettes and refined brushwork. Works like "Portrait of a Girl" (1886) exemplify this period, capturing the nuanced expressions and understated elegance that became hallmarks of her style. As her career progressed, Schjerfbeck's approach became more abstract and expressionistic, culminating in a series of haunting self-portraits later in life. She continued to paint actively until her death in 1946, in Saltsjöbaden, Sweden. Today, Schjerfbeck is celebrated as one of Finland's most significant artists, her work resonating with audiences worldwide for its emotional depth and innovative techniques.
