About the Item

An amazing antique portrait of a mariner. This is an atmospheric old original oil painting on canvas in its original gold frame. The artist is Henry Jacquier and his signature is in the top left of the painting. The frame carries a small plaque with the artist's name middle bottom. Additionally, there is a label on the back of the painting: 'Ancienne Maison Tussaint et P Ferret 35 Rue Vaneau, Paris and the date 1904'. The painting has been expertly crafted by a competent artist who studied at the School of Beaux-Arts in Lyon (see more below) and specialised in military paintings. Here, a salty sea dog who is most likely fighting in the 1st World War looks out towards the artist from under his cap. A rugged face, chaffed by the wind and a beard that looks like it has been blown sideways! A scarf and a warming waistcoat complete his uniform and the whole is unusual and incredibly charming. MORE ABOUT THIS PAINTING: Size including frame: 22.5ins x 19.5ins or 57cms x 50cms approx. Signed: Henry Jacquier (1878-1921) Born in Saint-Étienne, Henry Jacquier studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he won two medals, later he went to the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, with Aimé Morot, François Flameng, and Cormon. He made his debut at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français in 1898. Three years later, he won the Alphonse de Neuville Prize and a State Scholarship. He was also a founding member of the Society of Military Painters and the official painter of the Ministry of the Armed Forces, as well as the author of numerous portraits of Marshal Joffre (Marshal Joffre was a French general who served as Commander-in-Chief of French forces on the Western Front from the start of World War I until the end of 1916. He is best known for regrouping the retreating allied armies to defeat the Germans at the strategically decisive First Battle of the Marne in September 1914). He left for Champagne on December 15, 1914, accompanied by Bouchor and Flameng, then for the north region in January 1915. He returned from this last mission suffering from the illness that would eventually take his life. A major retrospective exhibition dedicated to the artist was held in 1923 at the Georges Petit Gallery in Paris. Condition report: This painting is in overall good condition for the age. However, it has not passed through time unscathed and there are minor imperfections throughout the canvas, there is also an old renovation patch on the back which leaves a scar on his face. The frame looks to be the original and is in good condition for the age, however you should expect imperfections throughout, especially at the corners where there is cracking and minor areas of plaster loss.
