About the Item

Attributed to James Holland (1799 -1870) and William Henry Hunt (1790-1864) A Portrait of a Young Girl Wearing a Garland of Morning Glory Flowers Oil on canvas: 17 ½ x 18 in. Frame: 23 ½ x 24 in. Circa 1820 An enchanting head and shoulders portrait of a young girl wearing a white shift, her short dark curls crowned with a red-ribband wreath of Morning Glory flowers, with her cheek resting on her hands clasped atop a column, against a ground of blue sky and two fluttering peacock butterflies. This unsigned work can be dated to the 1820’s, and is by a very accomplished hand. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, British painting was strongly influenced by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723–1792). The young girl in the present work bears a marked resemblance to Lady Gertrude Fitzpatrick, who was the subject of Reynolds's 1779 painting entitled 'Collina' (Columbus Museum of Art), (ill.1). It is likely the artist was familiar with this work and used Collina’s pretty face as the figure in the present fancy portrait. The portrait is almost certainly an allegory; Collina’s spiritual face, morning glory flowers signify love, affection or mortality and also the month of September. The butterflies typically represent the Greek goddess Psyche. It is interesting to note the importance given to this painting by the then owner when the canvas was relined in the 19th c, since the stretcher is impressed with the stamp 'W. Morrill Liner'. William Morrill (1838-1910) picture restorer took over his father’s business in 1866, working extensively for the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Collections and other prominent collectors. Our Attribution: This work dates to the 1820’s, too early to be by a high Victorian painter but has a pre-Raphaelite quality, so the artist surely went on to become a prominent mid-Victorian painter. There are only a few young artists painting in the late Regency period who could have executed the work. The very prominent Morning Glory suggests the hand of an accomplished flower painter who was very confident with morning glory flowers. James Holland RA (1799-1870) is a strong contender but he lacked skills as a portrait painter. Holland also favoured ‘tondo’, and is known to have painted several studies of morning glory(ill.2), and placed butterflies in his flower pieces (ill.3) Several years of research led our gallery to the firm conclusion that the work was a collaboration between Holland and his close friend William Henry Hunt, an accomplished painter of portraits, genre and still life. Hunt painting the young girl based upon Reynolds ‘Collina’, with Holland painting the flowers, sky and butterflies. Kevin’s family, owned James Hollands’ 1881 Royal Academy exhibit ‘Hollyhocks’ (ill.3) which he sold on behalf of his mother in 2013. Kevin grew up admiring Hollands distinctive blue sky, rich colouring of his flowers and graceful Peacock butterflies, a quality he saw in ‘Morning Glory’. We are very grateful to Steve Bond, fourth generation descendant of James Holland and author of his biography ‘James Holland, The Forgotten Artist’, Pub. Churnet Valley Books(ill.4) for his kind assistance with our attribution. Steve Bond researched his biography over 10 years, and enhanced it with a detailed and comprehensive list of Hollands’ known works. William Henry Hunt (1790-1864) was one of the key figures in nineteenth-century English watercolour painting. His work was extensively collected in his lifetime, particularly his genre pictures of children, often in humorous situations, and his detailed, naturalistic still lifes of fruit, flowers, and birds' nests that earned him the nickname ‘Bird’s Nest’ Hunt. James Holland (18 October 1799 – 12 December 1870) started his career painting flowers on pottery and porcelain for the William Davenport in Longport, before going on to be recognised as one of the finest watercolourists of the English School, best known for his flowers and later views of Venice. Holland was a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and first exhibited at the London Royal Academy in 1824. ……………………………………………….. Images and captions: 1. Portrait of Jeannie Netter, wearing a Burgundy dress
By Fedor Encke
Located in West Sussex, GB
Fedor Encke (1851-1926) – German Full length Portrait of Jeannie Netter, standing in an interior, wearing a Burgundy Velvet Dress holding a Pink Rose Oil on canvas :85 ¾ x 50 ¼ in. Frame :103 x 67 ¼ in. Signed & inscribed ‘New York’. Circa 1910 Jeannie Netter was an American born musician and song-writer but was mostly merited for her sculpture having been taught by the Russian artist Bernstamm. Fedor Encke was born in Berlin, Germany in 1851. Younger brother of Erdmann Encke who was a sculptor, Encke was the illegitimate grandson of King Frederick Wilhelm II of Prussia and Mistress Wilhelmine Encke, Countess of Lichtenau. Fedor studied under Karl Gussow in Berlin and then went on to study in Rome and Paris. Although he set up a studio in Berlin during the 1880’s, he seems to have travelled regularly between Paris and New York painting many American Society sitters, including President Theodore Roosevelt. Encke’s portrait of Roosevelt dressed in Rough Rider uniform, originally hung in the dining room of the White House and is now at the Presidents place of birth, Segamore Hill, New York. This portrait was also published as the frontispiece of ‘The Rough Riders’ by C. Scribners&Sons, 1899. Encke was in Paris in 1902 and painted the two banking giants, John H. Harjes and J.P. Morgan both having their portraits painted at the same time. To try and finish Morgan’s painting Encke hired a young photographer named Edward Steichen to take Morgan’s picture as a kind of aid memoir to minimize the sitting time. This photograph and the painting that resulted from it caused a considerable stir because of the uncompromising pose of Morgan. The portrait became synonymous with the new capitalism. Encke seems to have been very well connected socially and painted for many members of the European nobility as a result. Encke died in 1926. Works in Museums: Segamore Hill, New York (Portrait of Theodore Roosevelt) National Portrait Gallery America; Smithsonian; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art. 19th Century genre oil painting of a girl with flowers
By Jane Maria Bowkett
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Jane Maria Bowkett British, (1837-1891) Collecting Flowers Oil on canvas, signed with monogram Image size: 23.5 inches x 17.75 inches Size including frame: 29.25 inches x 23.5 inches A highly appealing genre painting of a young girl holding flowers by Jane Maria Bowkett. The girl is posed in a wild flower meadow in front of a wooded area and wears a white lace dress with a pink sash. On her head is a yellow straw hat decorated with white feathers and a ribbon. She is shown gripping the brim of her bonnet with one hand whilst holding a posy of flowers in the other. The girl bears a resemblance to the models featured in some of the artist's other paintings and could well have been a family member. Jane Maria Bowkett was a figure and genre painter born in Poplar, London on 17 September, 1837, the eldest child of Thomas Edward Bowkett and Jane Bowkett (nèe Watkinson). The family lived at East India Road where he father practiced as a surgeon, later becoming a doctor and was involved in the Chartist movement. Three of her sisters, Eliza Martha Bowkett (1839-1867), Jessie Undine Bowkett (1861-1886) and Leila Matilda Bowkett (1853-1924) also became artists. She attended the Government School of Design (now Royal College of Art) and in 1858 began her exhibiting career at the Society of Female Artist. In 1860, she started exhibiting at the British Institution and a year later made her debut at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. As well as exhibiting in London, she also exhibited more widely at the Birmingham Society of Artists, Royal Scottish Academy, Bristol Academy of Art and the Brighton Art Society. Most of her paintings were genre scenes featuring woman and children in a mixture of both interior and landscape settings. Her work also included a number of beach and coastal paintings. She married the still life and landscape artist Charles Stuart on 7 February, 1862 at All Saints Church in West Ham. Although married, she continued exhibiting under her maiden name. The couple spent the first years of their married life living in Stepney Causeway where they started a family. One of their sons Charles Edward Gordon...
