About the Item
An elegant oil portrait of a young Arab woman shown wearing a veil and gazing with candor and interest directly towards the viewer.
Signed lower left, "Jan Hoowij" (Dutch-American, 1907-1987), and painted circa 1960.
Born in Hengelo, Holland, Jan Hoowig first studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the Hague with Henk Meyer before attending the Academy Grande Chaumière in Paris. Before leaving occupied Holland in 1939 to live and work in London, Hoowij taught at the Hague's Academy of Fine Arts (1931-1934). After World War II, Hoowig moved to America and eventually settled in Encino and became known both for his surrealist work and for his penetrating portraiture of eminent members of the Hollywood community. His commissioned portraits include New York Mayor Robert F. Wagner, actor Van Heflin, folk-singer/actor Burl Ives and Los Angeles Mayor Norris Poulson.
Hoowij exhibited widely and with success including at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (1935); Brooklyn Museum (1942); Palais Chaillot, Paris (1946); Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (1947); and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1956). He was the recipient of prizes, medals and juried awards including the Royal Subsidy for Artists (Holland, 1931-1934), the Therese van Duyl Schwarze Portrait Prize (Amsterdam, 1936) and a purchase prize from the Witte Museum (San Antonio, 1959). Jan Hoowig's work can be found in the permanent collections of national museums including the Brooklyn Art Museum, the Witte Museum and the Joslyn Art Museum (Omaha) among others.

Winner of the Prix Othon Friesz, Janet Ament studied at the Chouinard Art Institute, the Los Angeles Art Center, and at the Otis Art Institute.
