About the Item

A contemporary portrait painting by Jaylen Pigford measuring 48 inches tall by 36 inches wide. This unique painting is signed by the artist and includes a certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery. Pigford's work often features the theme of a reoccurring lone figure which appears in each canvas and who is accompanied by scattered objects and varying solitary settings, indicating a prevalent sense of confusion and disorientation. Despite the circumstances the figure faces, positivity radiates from within each piece in the form of bright color, crisp edges, and pattern.This painting was featured in Pigford's 2022 solo show at Ivester Contemporary, entitled "Digging for Daisies." ‘Digging for Daisies’ represents a collection of recent works by Pigford. “This is a body of work that I’ve been working on for about the past eight or nine months now,” he says. “Usually what I like to do with my paintings, what I like to talk about, are things that are going on in my life, things that I’ve experienced. I’m just talking about me being in these negative environments or situations and having the strength to get through whatever it is that I’m going through, you know? Being able to change my life and make it the life that I want to live. It’s pretty much a series about growth.” Jaylen Pigford (b. 1996) is an Afro-Latino painter born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas and based in Houston. The son of an African-American father and a mother of Mexican descent, Pigford is a self-taught artist and has been creating artwork since childhood. He sees his work as a balance of light and dark. His paintings are autobiographical reflections on past negative experiences and adversity to tell a story of self-growth through uplifting works on canvas. “It is always good with the bad. We all struggle, our failures test us, it’s what action we take to correct them that matters most.”
