About the Item

Title: Young Woman Fetching Water Artist: Jesús Villar (1930–2015) Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 39.4 x 20.1 in Estimated date: c. 2000 Signature: Signed lower left: "Villar" Condition: Excellent. Canvas is taut and clean, mounted on a modern stretcher marked by Bellas Artes. Provenance: Private collection 📝 DESCRIPTION In Young Woman Fetching Water, Jesús Villar presents a tender rural figure, dressed in a traditional poncho and scarf, holding two ceramic jugs in her hands. The young woman, with a doll-like face and gentle gaze, stands against a backdrop of sunlit rooftops and whitewashed buildings that evoke a Mediterranean village. Villar's style blends expressive figuration with structural stylization. The elongated limbs, mask-like face, and slightly exaggerated features give the subject a puppet-like appearance, conveying both innocence and strength. The textured brushwork and controlled color palette reflect the artist's deep command of composition and mood. Far more than a simple rural scene, the painting reflects Villar’s concept of the “universal peasant” — a timeless symbol of labor, simplicity, and quiet dignity. 👤 ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: JESÚS VILLAR (1930–2015) Jesús Villar was a Spanish painter known for his figurative, realist approach centered on rural life and traditions. Born in 1930 and active until his death in 2015, Villar depicted scenes of peasant life with both charm and technical precision. He lived and worked in various regions of Spain — including Castile, Andalusia, Santander, and the Basque Country — and abroad in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Venezuela. His international experience enriched his worldview and led to exhibitions in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Rome, Caracas, Oslo, and New York. His work often focused on the “universal peasant,” portraying men, women, and children in timeless rural roles. His paintings were noted for their warmth, humanity, and a touch of humor. Villar exhibited widely and received recognition at events such as Spain’s National Exhibition of Fine Arts and the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation in Granada. His paintings remain sought after in auctions and private collections. 🎨 RELATED ARTISTS Villar’s expressive realism and rural themes connect him to several key figures in Spanish and European painting: José Gutiérrez Solana – for his raw, expressive depictions of traditional figures Antonio López Torres – for his calm and luminous rural scenes Ángel Díaz Huertas – for his figurative and slightly humorous portraits Eduardo Arroyo – for his stylized, symbolic approach to characters José Antonio Rodríguez Sánchez-Migallón – for his sensitive take on rural life

Woman Selling Fruit oil on canvas painting european art
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Woman Selling Fruit Author: Rosendo González Carbonell Technique and Support: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 31.9 x 25.6 in (unframed) Period: 1970s Style: Costumbrist realism with impressionist influences Condition: Part of a private collection Description of the Artwork The painting portrays a woman holding a basket filled with fruit, notably apples and pears, focusing on warm and dark contrasts that add depth and realism to the composition. The artist creates an intimate atmosphere, skillfully manipulating light to highlight the woman's facial features and the textures of the fruit. The figure’s attire evokes a classical style, likely inspired by costumbrist themes. Rosendo González Carbonell, renowned for his focus on traditional scenes and female figures, employs in this piece loose yet precise brushstrokes, creating dynamism that enhances the composition. The warm hues of the fruit and the serene expression of the woman reflect the artist’s intention to capture a moment of everyday life with sensitivity and expressiveness. Author’s Biography Rosendo González Carbonell (Barcelona, 1910 - 1984) was a Spanish painter recognized for his focus on female figures, portraits, and landscapes. He studied at the Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sabadell under the mentorship of Mayoral and Antoni Alsina i Amils and also attended the "Llotja" art academy in Barcelona. He was a disciple of Bonaventura Puig Perucho and maintained a close friendship with painter Alejandro Huerta Lucas. He participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions held in Barcelona in 1942 and 1944. His work reflects the tradition of Catalan painters such as Joaquim Mir and Santiago Rusiñol, as well as influences from impressionist masters like Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. González Carbonell often depicted small villages, rural churches, and tranquil landscapes, balancing meticulous detail with impressionist brushstrokes that bring his compositions to life. Similar Artists González Carbonell shares artistic sensitivities with other renowned painters who captured the essence of landscapes and human figures through light and color: Joaquim Mir: Renowned for his luminous interpretations of the Catalan landscape. Santiago Rusiñol: Famous for his delicate depictions of rural scenes and local architecture. Josep Amat...

Spanish woman loading her donkey in the town street
Located in New York, NY
Mariano Sigüenza y Ortiz was a Spanish painter and engraver born in Valencia. This copper painter and engraver was a disciple of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos, in the early years of the 19th century. It is known that he came from a family dedicated to the art of silk making, so it is not surprising that he began his training at the Academy of San Carlos with the intention of applying his knowledge to this field. However, it seems that he opted for painting and later for intaglio engraving. Of his production as a painter, a copy of the painting La Virgen con el Niño y San Juan Bautista, the work of Mengs, and Los santos penitentes Pablo y Antonio, for which he obtained the 17 January 1836 a Supernumerary Academic position, for painting. Later, he devoted himself exclusively to the exercise of copper engraving. As an engraver, he illustrated the Biographical Dictionary, by Oliva, and the History of Spain, by Father Mariana. The engraving of El Niño Jesús...
