About the Item

Signed lower right 'K. Buzzell Benepe' and dated 1936. A psychologically penetrating character study by this early California woman artist. Benepe captures the essential sensitivity of her subject as she gently cradles her doll while gazing at the viewer with both candor and charm. Katherine Buzzell Benepe first studied at the University of California in Los Angeles and, later, with Nicolai Fechin and Elmer Schofield. Widely recognized for her psychologically penetrating studies of Native Americans, she was a member of the Los Angeles Art Association, the Pasadena Art Association, the San Diego Art Guild. She also served for many years as President of the Glendale Art Association. Benepe exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards including at the Pasadena Art Association (1936),the Woman Painters of the West Annual Exhibition (1954) and the Glendale Art Association (1953-5). Katharine Benepe had her portrait painted by the Taos artist, Nicolai Fechin, and we have included a photograph of his portrait of Benepe, painted circa 1930, in this listing. This photograph is included solely for illustration purposes.
