About the Item
French 18th century old master portrait of a majestic lady dressed "à la Turque"
The sitter at the viewer with a kind and enigmatic smile and twinkling eyes. She looks elegant and kind, yet also has an intelligent and determined aura, reflecting the character of someone who is in charge of her own life and destiny.
De Silvestre paid great attention to her spectacular outfit, which is striking in its portrayal of the sumptuous fabrics and their decorative richness. She is wearing a luxurious royal blue robe à la Turque which features a thick fur trim, elegantly lifting her robe so that we can admire her narrow waist and the incredibly expensive fur-lining. Her golden silk dress is further complemented with a delicately embroidered bodice which has been adorned with countless precious stones, silver threads and lace. Her feathery headpiece features a silk veil which has been attached to her hat with a string of large pearls.
Louis de Silvestre (23 June 1675 – 11 April 1760) was a French painter, who was court painter to King Augustus II of Poland and director of the Royal Academy of Arts in Dresden. Friedrich August II, the prince-elector of Saxony, met Silvestre when he was in France and offered him the chance to work at the court of his father Augustus II, King of Poland. The artist accepted the offer, obtained permission from Louis XV, and set off on April 23, 1716; by 1718 he was living in Dresden. Both Augustus II and his son were great admirers of Silvestre's work, and bestowed upon him, in the space of thirty years, every honour imaginable: he was appointed first court painter, then, in 1727, director of the Royal Academy of Arts; he was ennobled in 1741, as was his brother Charles-François. During this period, Silvestre completed, with the help of his wife, Marie-Catherine Hérault, many oil paintings and frescos, either in Dresden or in Warsaw. He painted many portraits of the King and Queen, as well as those of other leading aristocrats. He was responsible for the most important works in the Palace of Dresden, notably, subjects drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses for several ceremonial bedrooms and several ceilings. On the death of Heinrich Christian Fehling [de] (1654–1725), Silvestre was made Director of the Art Academy in Dresden.
During the time he remained at the court of Dresden, Silvestre was known as much for his personality and his distinguished friends, as by his artistic talents. The great number of works that came from his brush and the generosity of his patrons allowed him to amass a considerable fortune, and, having achieved financial security, he retired and returned to France. Louis XV awarded him a pension of 1000 crowns and apartments in the Palais du Louvre itself. In 1752 he was appointed director of the Academy of Paris.
The painting has been attributed to Louis de Silvestre by Cabinet Turquin.

View All17th century German portrait of the wine merchant Caspar Roemerskirchen
Located in Aartselaar, BE
17th century German portrait of the wine merchant Caspar Roemerskirchen at the age of 26 in 1628, Gottfried von Wedig also known as Gotthardt Wedig (attr.)
This highly decorative portrait depicts the 26 year old Caspar Roemerskirchen, wearing an intricate jacket made of a luxurious black fabric, which is stiffened and shaped to perfectly fit his silhouette. It is adorned with an opulent collar, which at the time was a true status symbol, worn to emphasise the refined class and social status of the sitter. In his hands he is holding luxurious soft leather gloves. The vivid green drapery and table cloth add further vivacity to the portrait. His ice blue eyes appear to be shimmering with a life-like quality. After extensive archival research, we were able to discover that our sitter was a wine merchant; what joyous stories he must have to tell!

Dimensions: h. 35.82, w. 28.34 in.
Period Louis XIV giltwood and carved frame with laurel leaves.
Framed dimensions: h. 42.52 in, w. 33.85 in.
Provenance: Collection of the Marquis de Bailleul at the Château d'Angerville-Bailleul (before 1942).
To be included in the catalog raisonné of the artist by Stephane Perreau
Important portrait of a young woman depicted half-length turned three-quarters, her face looking at the viewer.
Dressed in a brick red velvet dress, an elegant blue scarf envelops her figure.
Hair styled “a la Fontange”, her powdered hair is raised and tied at the back with a red ribbon, several curly locks escape from her bun and fall on her back and shoulders.
The perfectly oval face with regular features dominated by her straight nose is softened by her gray eyes with slightly lowered lids. The red tinged skin tones on the cheeks and cheekbones color the face and make the portrait come alive.
The young woman is portrayed standing near a pot of carnations. Her strongly lighted figure stands out against an architectural background of columns.
The artist's palette is made of contrasts opposing warm to cold hues. The icy electric blue contrasts with the fiery brick red, the hair powdered with white accentuates even more the flush of the cheeks.
The left arm bent at the elbow, extending the open hand with slightly bent fingers in the foreground brings depth to the composition.
Our portrait, an interesting testimony in the corpus of works of the painter, is part of his youthful period, around 1700-1705.
The former belonging of this portrait to the Marquis de Bailleul reinforces the remarkable character of our painting.
The portrait has been examined by Stéphane Perreau, specialist of Jean Ranc and will be included in the catalog raisonné currently being written, under number P. 43. The notice edited by Mr Perreau is below:
"Painted around 1700-1705, this portrait of a woman is directly inherited from Hyacinthe Rigaud, the master of Jean Ranc (the hand turned over the front, in a watch...
