About the Item

Natale Schiavoni (Chioggia 1777 - Venice 1858) Odalisque Pastel on paper, 60 x 45 cm Frame, 77 x 64.5 cm Signed and dated upper left: N. Schiavoni 1856 The painting is signed Natale Schiavoni (Chioggia, April 25, 1777 - Venice, April 16, 1858) was an Italian painter and engraver, best known for his portraits and genre scenes characterized by delicate sensuality and elegant execution. Born into a family of artists-his father Felice was a painter particularly appreciated by his contemporaries-Schiavoni initially trained in his father's workshop. His precocious artistic inclination soon led him to Venice, where he was able to study and come into contact with the leading exponents of the lagoon city's artistic milieu. His career developed through different phases and influences. Initially linked to the eighteenth-century Venetian painting tradition, with a focus on color and light, Schiavoni was able to perpetuate a profound evolution in his style, incorporating into his works elements characteristic of neoclassicism and romanticism, trends dominant in the early nineteenth century. He became particularly appreciated for his portraits, in which he was able to sensitively capture the personality and elegance of his subjects, often members of the high society of his time. His female figures are characterized by idealized beauty and an aura of refined melancholy. In addition to portraits, Schiavoni also devoted himself to genre painting, producing intimate and graceful scenes, often featuring female figures in languid poses or in idealized everyday settings. His skill in drawing and his attention to detail contributed to making these works particularly pleasing and sought after. Schiavoni traveled often in his career, staying in Trieste and Milan, where he worked as a portrait painter and met important cultural and aristocratic figures. These travels broadened his artistic horizons and influenced his output. He returned to Venice and continued his painting activities successfully until his death in 1858. His work remains evidence of a transitional period in the Italian art scene, in which the Venetian tradition was opening up to new sensibilities and influences. That of the Odalisque is certainly one of the subjects most in demand by the aristocratic and upper middle-class clientele of the mid-19th century; it was in fact, on several occasions, replicated by the artist: illustrative in this sense appears to be the painting in the Revoltella Museum in Trieste (inv. 13), an institution that holds no less than five paintings by Schiavoni. In this version, whose attribution to the chiozzotte-born artist has been confirmed by Fernando Mazzocca, the surface-and, as it were, "masquerade-like"-exoticism of the usual female half-figure blends with the winking smile and intriguing glance mischievously directed at the viewer. The refined sensuality of the alabastrine bust, which stands out against the textural effects of the precious fabrics, particularly fascinated the patrons of the time, who particularly appreciated this segment of Schiavoni's production. Although his output is vast and includes works in oil, it is in pastel that Schiavoni has demonstrated a distinctive sensitivity and delicacy, capturing with rare precision the nuances and expressions of his subjects. His pastel works are distinguished by the brightness of the colors and the softness of the textures, elements that give the portraits and Orientalist-inspired subjects a remarkable vitality and a kind of transparency. Schiavoni was able to render with fidelity the details of the fabrics, the luster of the jewelry and, above all, the depth of the gazes, revealing the psychology of the characters depicted. His skillful use of pastel testifies to a deep understanding of the potential of this medium, which he used to create visually striking and remarkably refined works, helping to keep alive the tradition of pastel portraiture in an era dominated by oil. Natale Schiavoni's pastel works remain valuable testimonies today of an art that combines technical virtuosity and profound aesthetic sensitivity.
