About the Item

About the Series: To be grounded is to feel centered, balanced, no matter the outside circumstances, like a tree with deep roots. Being ungrounded, by contrast, is like being a sapling blown over in a storm; vulnerable, and easily thrown off course. One’s early 20s are typically a period of coming into your own — of growing those deep roots necessary to feel grounded in early adulthood. But for the generation born in 2000, that process has been impossibly complicated by the chaos of the coronavirus pandemic and its fallout. From 2020 to 2022, nearly every area of these young adults’ lives has been ungrounded, upended, and rearranged, from finishing college, to maintaining friendships and relationships, to starting their careers. Rather than crystalizing their understanding of themselves and the world around them, this generation finds itself yearning for any sense of normalcy and stability. How can they find balance, a sense of self, or grounding in a time when the future is so unpredictable, ungrounded? Just as a strong tree needs its roots to be complete, today’s youth must steer themselves towards a firm sense of self while absorbing the lessons of this period of historic instability. GROUNDED/UNGROUNDED seeks to capture the not-so-normal experience of becoming an adult in the 21st century through portraits of five 22-year-old women, each born in the year 2000. Drawing on symbolism from the natural world, these paintings highlight the contrast between being grounded and not. In Taking Flight, the two young subjects are airborne; one smiles at the viewer, while her open-mouthed counterpart delivers a silent reproach in her direction. Though both subjects, sporting white button-down shirts and bare legs, represent the duality between the corporate and the natural world — or perhaps the irony of sitting for a Zoom job interview in one’s childhood bedroom — only one has been able to stay grounded in her youthful innocence and, in so doing, embody an inborn confidence. In portraying these juxtapositions, the series will showcase the resiliency of a generation denied a typical coming of age.
