About the Item
Portrait of a Lady, English School Mid-1600s oil painting on canvas in good condition. La giovane donna ritratta a mezzo busto, identificata come Jane Bromley è dipinta con un copricapo da vedova, indossato durante il lutto.
This early English school work depicts the widow with a blank stare, a cerulean, ethereal appearance, devoid of background and context, her austere, cloistered attire embellished only by a brooch. The dark locks of hair sticking out of the headdress and the woman's complexion denounce her young age.
From iconographic research we were able to identify the figure of Jane Bromley . She was the heiress of Hallon Manor (later Davenport) and great-grandmother of Henry Davenport III (1677-1731), who married Barbara Ivory (died 1748). The distinctive headdress she wears was typical of widows of the time; the mourning explains both the austerity and the intensity of the painting.
This antique painting of the English school dates from the first half of the 17th century and comes from a private collection in Lombardy, purchased in an auction sale at Christie's London on Feb. 28, 1936, lot no. 70 sold as John Riley, portrait of Lady Uvedale de Tompkyns; it is in good condition within a wooden frame with pastille decoration and mecha finish. The painting is unsigned.
A similar painting is on display at the Fox Talbot Museum at Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire, England, given on loan by the same Davenport family since 1993.
To export an antique art object from Italy, an export license called BELLE ARTI must be applied for from the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. the issuance of such a government license takes a couple of weeks or so, to be added to the order's shipping time.
