About the Item

French school of the second half of the 19th century, portrait of elegant woman with green kimono, oil on canvas. With great decorative impact, the painting depicts a pretty girl taken in a three-quarter view with her hair pulled up in the oriental style dressed in a green silk kimono. In the 19th century, Japonism had a major influence on French art, particularly in painting, decorative arts and literature. This movement, born out of a fascination with Japanese culture and art following Japan's opening to foreign trade, had a profound impact on Western artistic creation in the second half of the century. Portraiture in the second half of the century is often fascinated by the East so much so that models were made to dress according to Eastern tastes. The painting has a 19th-century gilded wooden frame. It is signed in the lower right corner but the signature is difficult to read. Very good state of preservation.
