Price Upon Request - A Young LadyBy William Edward FrostLocated in London, GBOil on board Image size: 5 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches (14 x 11.5 cm) Original 19th century oval mount and frame Provenance; With Richard Naworth, Blackburn William Edward Frost (September 1810 – 4 June 1877) was an English painter of the Victorian era. Virtually alone among English artists in the middle Victorian period, he devoted his practice to the portrayal of the female nude. Specialising in portraiture from about 1830, Frost painted more than 300 portraits during a 15-year period, and showed some as his first exhibits from 1836. William Edward Frost was born in Wandsworth, then in Surrey, in September 1810. He showed artistic talent from an early age, and was encouraged in this by his father: first by his arranging drawing lessons with a Miss Evatt, a neighbouring amateur, and then, in 1825, by his introducing him to William Etty, who became his mentor. On Etty’s recommendation, he entered Henry Sass’s School for Drawing and Painting at 6 Charlotte Street, in 1826, and spent three years there, while also studying at the British Museum each winter. Frost was educated in the schools of the Royal Academy, beginning in 1829; he established a reputation as a portrait painter before branching into historical and mythological subjects, including the subgenre of fairy painting...Category

- A Portrait of Maud Fealey, Original Oil on Canvas PaintingBy Frank Owen SalisburyLocated in Nutfield, SurreyFrank Owen Salisbury (1874-1962) British Francis ("Frank") Owen Salisbury was an English artist who specialised in portraits, large canvases of historical and ceremonial events, stained glass and book illustration. In his heyday he was valued and admired on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1901 he married Alice Maude with whom he had twin daughters. His first Royal Academy exhibit was a portrait of Alice. It is for portraiture that he is best known. His speed in producing portraits stemmed from his painting his own twin daughters every morning for an hour and his career began with child portraiture and his painting the Hertfordshire gentry and members of the Harpenden Methodist Church. He had a studio at his home, Sarum Chase. A providential meeting with Lord Wakefield, founder of Castrol Oils and a Methodist philanthropist, saw his introduction to society portraiture. Salisbury's being selected to paint the Boy Cornwell in the Battle of Jutland then brought him to the notice of Royalty. Lord Wakefield then arranged for him to paint President Woodrow Wilson whilst he was in London, but Wilson departed for Paris and the opportunity was lost. It was to be John W. Davis, American Ambassador to London, who encouraged Salisbury to go to the USA; Davis had met Salisbury at art receptions and had admired his child portraits. Twenty-five members of the Royal House of Windsor sat for Salisbury and he was the first artist to paint HM Queen Elizabeth II. He painted Winston Churchill on more occasions than any other artist; the two iconic images of Churchill - The Siren Suit and Blood, Sweat and Tears are both Salisbury images. Other significant portraits include those of Richard Burton, Andrew Carnegie, Sir Alan Cobham, Sir Robert Ludwig Mond, Maria Montessori, Montgomery of Alamein, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, Benito Mussolini, John Player, Lord Rank, Jan-Christiaan Smuts and Sir Henry Wood...Category

$2,040 Sale Price20% Off - Portrait of a Lady with a Venetian Lace Fan c.1595, Remarkable conditionBy Frans Pourbus the YoungerLocated in London, GBThis resplendent painting follows in the tradition of royal portraits and was designed to convey an image of courtly majesty. Titan Fine Art presents this portrait in which the sitter wears a black gown, a white reticella ruff and matching wrist ruffs, and the typically Spanish long-hanging loose sleeves, under which are undersleeves trimmed with gold and silver. The one-piece gown is decorated with different textiles and different shades of black. In addition to the costly materials there is a fortune in jewellery displayed, most remarkable is the huge gold, ruby, and pearl pendant in the form of two cherubs supporting a crown, and the heavy four-layered golden chain necklace. The expensive attire proclaims to every onlooker that this is a superior being. This stately and formal portrait had become a standard format for aristocratic portraiture in late 16th-century Europe. The Venetian flag fan (in Italian: ventarola) in her hand was probably manufactured in Venice where the carrying of flag fans was especially prevalent throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries before they gave way to the modern type of folding fan. Even though their use spread throughout Italy they never, it is thought obtained any great vogue outside of Italy. The example in our portrait is cut with fine lace and it served a practical purpose – the 'flag' spun around the handle creating a breeze – but also signified the elite status and refined taste of its possessor. The English Elizabethan and early Jacobean traveller and writer Thomas Coryat (also Coryate) (c.1577-1617) wrote during his visit in 1608: "The first fannes that I saw in Italy did I observe in this space betwixt Pizzighettone and Cremons. But afterward I observed them common in most places of Italy where I travelled. These fannes both men and women of the country do carry to cool themselves withall in the time of heat, by the often fanning of their faces. They were used every day and discarded when old, worn out, or soiled. Most of them are very elegant and pretty things." Thus, this painting is a rare and early portrayal of this accessory. The painting is also notable for its state of preservation having not undergone a lining process (laid onto a newer canvas for support) and as such it is extremely rare for a painting of this age. Held in a good quality antique ebonised frame. Frans Pourbus...Category
