About the Item

This superb British self portrait oil painting is by noted artist Sir Walter Westley Russell CVO, RA, RWS. He had a distinguished career: Russell became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1926 and served as Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools from 1927 to 1942. He was also a teacher and then Assistant Professor at the Slade School of Fine Art between 1895 and 1927. Russell was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1931, and was knighted in 1935. The composition, painted circa 1920, is a seated self portrait of Russell in his studio, probably in the Royal Academy itself, surrounded by brushes, books and other paraphernalia. He is wearing a dark three piece suit and bow tie, hands in his lap. The majority of the painting is impressionistic, leaving all the attention to detail on his face. Although turned slightly away from the viewer, Russell's head is turned to be squarely looking at the viewer through his wire rimmed glasses and his strong features are easily recognisable and honestly captured - long face and nose, high hairline, dark slightly greying hair - there is no mistaking it is Russell. The flesh tones and the way the light catches the right hand side of his face are superb. The way his detailed face looms out of the soft focus of the rest of the room is very engaging and one can't help but hold his gaze. This is an excellent example of Russell's work and a first class self portrait. Provenance: With contemporary inscription on the label on the stretcher "W W Russell Eq ARA The Royal Academy Schools Back Entrance", Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ornate frame, 37 inches by 32 inches and in good condition. Sir Walter Westley Russell CVO RA (1867-1949) was a British painter and art teacher. He became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1926 and served as Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools from 1927 to 1942. Russell was born in Forest Gate, Essex, in 1867 and studied at the Westminster School of Art under Professor Frederick Brown. He exhibited five works at the Royal Academy between 1891 and 1904, including The Pierrots, Tea Time and a portrait. He exhibited at New English Art Club from 1893. He was a teacher and then Assistant Professor at the Slade School of Fine Art between 1895 and 1927. As a landscape painter he worked mainly in Yorkshire, Norfolk and Sussex. He also painted portraits and genre pictures. He was one of 150 artists chosen to represent Britain at the 1912 Venice Biennale Exhibition. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics. During World War I, he was a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers and was mentioned in dispatches. He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Academy on 22 April 1920, becoming a full Academician on 23 February 1926 and a Senior Academician on 1 January 1943. He served as Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools from October 1927 (he was appointed at the General Assembly on 28 June 1927), leading the school through a period when it was abolishing the Visitor system in favour of permanent staff. He retired in 1942, becoming Honorary Keeper from Michaelmas Day until the end of the year. He also became a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1930 and was a trustee of the National Gallery (appointed in 1927) and of the Tate Gallery (appointed 1934). Russell was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1931, and was knighted in 1935. He married Lydia Burton (1881–1944) in 1900 and they had no children. He died at his home in Kensington, London in 1949.

The Artist's Studio - Scottish 1914 Glasgow Boy art exh interior oil painting
By Alexander Roche
Located in London, GB
This superb RSA exhibited Scottish Edwardian interior oil painting is by Glasgow Boy artist Alexander Ignatius Roche. It was painted circa 1914 when Roche was living at 8 Royal Terrace, on Calton Hill, a very prestigious property in Edinburgh, now the Halcyon Hotel. The painting is a view of Roche's studio, quite possibly one of the rooms at the above address. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy the following year, no. 333 entitled The Studio. The painting shows Roche beneath the vast window in his studio against a red wall that meets pale floorboards. Various items and furniture are scattered about. The balance of the white window and pale floorboards with the red wall intersecting is perfect. A really lovely example of this great Glasgow Boy artist's work and a very personal piece showing his inner sanctum. Signed lower right. Provenance. Exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy 1915 no. 333, entitled The Studio. Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame, 32 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Alexander Ignatius Roche RSA NEAC RP (1861-1921) was a Scottish artist in the late 19th century and an important figure in the “Glasgow Boys. He was born in the Gallowgate in Glasgow, the son of a milliner, Alexander Roche. He attended St Mungo’s Academy in Bridgeton, Glasgow. He originally trained as an architect, but then changed to art, studying at the Glasgow School of Art and, from 1881, at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Here he studied under Gustave Boulanger and Jean-Leon Gerome. In his time here he befriended William Kennedy, John Lavery, Thomas Millie Dow and William Stott. In the early 1880s he joined a colony of Scots artists in Grez-sur-Loing south of Fontainebleau. On his return to Scotland in 1885 he joined with the Glasgow Boys working on murals for the 1888 International Exhibition. In 1888 he travelled to Capri where he befriended Fabio Fabbi and Harold Speed. In following years he visited both Venice and Florence, and married an Italian girl on the latter trip. This marriage was short-lived and they separated. As both were Catholics there seems to have never been any divorce. In 1896 he moved from Glasgow to Edinburgh and began to distance himself from the Glasgow Boys. His work drifted from largely landscape to portraits. In 1906 he remarried (possibly bigamously), to Jean Alexander, daughter of Robert Alexander. During this period they enjoyed the friendship of Joseph Crawhall...
